DI = Direct Impingement
It refers to the fact that the bolt is directly acted upon by gases piped off the barrel, and those gases are what causes the cycling of the action. As opposed to a gas piston rifle, where the gases act upon the piston, and the piston cycles the action (which would be indirect). Both gas piston rifles and DI rifles are gas operated, piston rifles just have an intermediary between the gas and the BCG.Comment
