Blast is the best substrate prep but I've had good results with just sanding everything down and painting per the online directions.
The finish is over 2 years old and I beat the hell out of this gun. She's got a few thousand rounds and is 100% compliant.

Alumahyde 2, in the rattle can. Follow the directions and don't touch for 2 weeks minimum and it'll last for a long time. This is my go to rifle, and the only wear is the groove the selector makes.

C 1 - I used semi-gloss Krylon black I bought at Home Depot for another project. I just touched up the bottom where the trigger plate was. The pistol grip (went with solar tactical fin) and trigger guard covers a good part & you can't really notice a difference.

I'm too lazy to let the alumahyde sit for 2 weeks. Usually I let it dry overnight or 2 days, then bake it for a couple hours, and let it sit for another 2 or 3 days. Then assemble and shoot. Anything that comes off is going to come off no matter how long you wait.

POR 15 Semi-Gloss. You brush it on the bare metal and when it dries completely in 24 hours it isn't ever coming off. Only paint I know of that a brushed on finish looks like it is sprayed on. Just prep the metal right and you will not be disappointed.
