What's that little garage door thingy on AR chambers?

I've noticed some ARs have it and a few don't. It always seems to be left open, and appears to be a little dust cover or some such thing for the chamber. What's the deal with it? What's it called? What happens if you shoot with it closed - I'm guessing milk comes out your nose. School me please!

You're correct. A dust/ejection port cover. When fired, the bolt pushes the cover open. Notice the groove in the bolt.

Is this a serious question? sorry but Ok now that I got that out of my system, that is the ejection port cover. Yes it is meant to keep dust out of the chamber areas. It will automatically pop open when you pull the charging handle.

Sorry, Didn't mean to sound like a jerk. Usually people that have been on as long as you have been pretty schooled on the ar platform whether it was voluntary or not. Lol I certainly never expected to get into it. now I have 2 and 2 more possibly in the works. The part that seriously made me laugh was your description. Sounds like something my wife would have said 6 months ago

Nah, no worries Noah. I deliberately tried to steer clear of ARs for as long as possible in a fruitless effort to keep a few coins in my pocket and the wife happy. I'm failing miserably on both counts, but the Mrs. did enjoy shooting a rented AR a couple of weeks ago, so maybe it won't be so bad after all. Now it's time to start asking all those "dumb" questions as well as planting the seed in her head that I've gotta have one (or two or three or...).

Yeah I swore up and down it would only be one. Well then she wanted her own, so I built her a bcm that became mine. Got her a 10/22 instead. Got matching lowers for my dd and bcm uppers. Now I'm sitting on 2 doublestar complete lowers again, and I just cant have 2 lonely lowers that can't join in on the fun right? lol
