Mid length or Rifle Length FF Quad Rail on my 16" ?

Which would you you choose? I'm getting a YHM Free float rail soon and Can't decide if I want Mid or Rifle length on my 16" carbine system... Any pro's cons to getting a rifle vs a midlength( YHM 'specter' length)?

I think it depends on what kind of stock youre running. the longer the rail the more front heavy the guns gonna be. if balance doesnt matter and you want a longer site radius go rifle length. otherwise I say go specter.

With a carbine gas system I'd go with the specter because i like the lo-pro gas block not visible in front of the forearm, and I'd not go with the rifle because I'm cheap and wouldn't need it with carbine gas to get the look.

Need more details about the rifle it's going on. Gas system? Intending to use a front sight?

Are you talking about looks or function?

That particular YHM rail is going to be very HEAVY in mid or rifle length. If you insist on YHM, at least get the diamond or the lightweight model.

I would suggest you take a look at the Troy TRX as well - it is not that much more expensive than the YHM and is lighter. It's not a quad rail but it has rail panels you can install to mount the one or two items you are likely to need - plus you don't need to buy rail panels to make it comfortable for your hand.

If you really want a quad rail, I'd get a quality light one like the DD - buy once, cry once.

I really like my YHM diamond series free float rail. I dont see what there is to cry over unless you have small hands.

Stock is Magpul Moe, its carbine length gas system and I will be using BUIS. The lightweight and standard weight are the same price and rifle length(120) is 18 dollars more then the specter length(102)..

If you're dead set on switching out your front sight for a low profile gas block, you may as well do with rifle length and try to get lightweight. Aesthetically I think the longer tube looks better, and you can get a longer sight radius. You also have more room to move goodies around on the rails. Other than weight, there's really not much reason to go with the shorter tubes.

Go to ar15builder.com or whatever it's called. You can link to it from the banners up top. They have YHM rails.

If going with a mid-length YHM rail I would suggest you use a micro gas block or else you will not be able to screw on the end-cap. If you want to use a full-size gas block that will cover the holes left by the taper pins then you need to go specter length at minimum if you also want to use the end cap.

if you go YHM I really suggest you use an end cap it really cleans up that big gap at the end.

                            Other considerations:
                            * your technique - what sort of stance & how do you hold your foreend?
                            * what will you attach to the foreend (lights, sights, etc)

I am slightly bladed and I extend my support arm quite a bit, so I need rifle length foreends on my rifles now (I grasp it almost all the way at the end).

I'm basically just attaching a a VERTICAL grip and sights for now, maybe a bipod in the future. Usually support the front with the VFG, even when using bags. I'd probably attach it right in the middle of a Mid length based on where i put it on my old MOE's..

Do you guys put your front sight at the very end of the rail with a rifle length HG?
