30" overall at the shortest configuration. The barrel must be 16" overall, 11 1/2" barrel your gonna need some type of extention to get you over 16"

55.5" barrel? that is 111/2 right?

well an easy answer is the overall length of the barrel INCLUDING a pinned/welded flash hider needs to be 16".

so easy math. if you have an 11" barrel you need a 5" permanently attached flash hider and so on and so forth

With an 11.5 inch barrel, you'll need a 4.5inch muzzle device permanently pinned to be in compliance with the law. If your looking for the shortest possible configuration, a 14.5 inch barrel and a 1.5 inch pinned muzzle device will get you the same length and greater velocity. I'd take that approach, but that's just me.

But to be clear to the new guy....

You CAN NOT simply put an 11.5" barrel on your stripped lower, leave the buttstock off, and call it a pistol.

Just a 11.5 inch would be a short barrel rifle. Illegal in Ca an only legal in other states with fed tax stamps an other hoops to leap though.

How every you get it there, that is welded, pinned etc the minimum length for a rifle barrel is 16" with the total length of the rifle (collapsible stock in the shortest position) has to be at least 30".

Ya I know every one else said it too. Just wanted to sound itergent.

other than a pistol.. this is about as short as you can go with a AR riffle...

                      11.5" barrel, 5.5" FS with a 31" OAL

wrong. a 4.5" FH on a 11.5" barrel will not give you 16". You are forgetting the overlap when you screw on the FH to the barrel.

                        You'll need atleast a 5" long flashider/muzzlebreak/compensator.

My mistake, I was not thinking about the overlap. Most that i know of are 5.5 like the poster above has so that would work great.

Some people think that a 5.5" flash hider will get a 10.5" barrel up to 16" too...

People almost always forget the 5/8" of overlap.
