More about the Remington Gas-Piston (RGP) AR upper:

The RGP upper is not the standard Short Stroke like the HK 416, LWRC POF or Adams ams, etc. They took a different direction and went with a mid length gas piston design as opposed to the PWS long stroke and the other short stroke pistons.

Spent some time with Greg Baradat, the production team leader this after noon. Its a nice departure from the ordinary. Greg said the RGP's barrel is held in place by 4 allen bolts so it should be easy to change.

I like it a lot, especially the look of the monolithic upper and the new gas system. I say loose the ACS though, doesn't fit the rest of the rifle. Needs a CTR.

Availability depends on what happens to the M4. If the Military wants a platform upgrade, this upper, and a complete gun will be pushed. If the Military wants a brand new platform they'll have the ACR.
If the GPU makes market they'd like it to hit as a full gun, and as a replacement upper.

Need to see internals... the odd upper shape makes me think they could have done some things "right."

Internals are the same as an AR except for the barrel nut an piston design. Some folks don't like the monolithic, but I think that's the direction in the industry due to military feedback.
At SHOT, there were several monolithic designs. Armalite, Mega, LaRue, VLTOR, and Remington all have a monolithic upper on market or in development.

Its kinda fugly. I dont understand why people dont build an upper for the AR platform that has the features that we liked in the ACR/XCR/SCAR. How hard would it be to add a charging handle like the ACR and design the upper as a piston upper from the start with a redesigned BCG. I would much rather buy something like that than a new rifle. To me it looks like remington just half a"d it to look like the ACR. Notice how the handguard is the same design on both the new upper and the ACR. Crap I tell ya crap! Its like the ACR consolation prize. Here ya go, we priced 90% of you out of the ACR but heres an upper so you can pretend you have one.....

From what I saw at LaRue (the OBR Lite), it's not a monolithic upper receiver; they just machined the upper and forearm with a flange built in. I think it can utilize a standard barrel. Of course I could be wrong about that...
