if you want an out of the box shooter for a good price buy a savage. but if you want a good shooter that you can upgrade into a supreme shooter go remy. if you plan on competing, go remy. how many savage sniper rifles do you see in the military? i own 4 or 5 bolt guns including a rem 700, and i have never had one jam.

I was considering a Savage but after reading through some threads on here I now own a Remington 700. I've been getting very good groups from it that will probably get even better when I skim bed the stock.

So I have to return my Savage?

Dang it ! Just got the new 12VLP in .308, took it to the range, fired 6 3 shot groups. The first and largest was 1.37" Terrible. OH, out of the six, 5 were sub 0.8" and 3 of those were sub 0.5" all at only 100 yds. (this is my first .308 so these terrible results could be shooter error) Now I read this thread and it says I did wrong and must buy a Remington 700. Dag nab it, this savage is so purdy too. Maybe I'll just hang on to it and see if it gets any better.

First off, shoot 10 shot groups.
3 shot groups don't tell you much.
Stay with your savage until you realize the shortcomings.
              Some people never do.
Only serious shooters will fully realize the inherent problems and take corrective action to fix them.

If I were going to buy a new rifle, it would be a Savage.

For budget, I'd go with a Savage. If budget is no problem, I'll go with both. Don't underestimate the Savage. I have a 10FP .223 and it shoots 1/2 MOA right from the start with Black Hills 68 gr HP. With either both guns, I'll go with a better stock, either with McMillan or Bells & Carlson.

Notice I said first rifle. I shot 3 shot groups so I could see point of impact. If I shoot more than 3 shots at one target group, I don't see the hole. These were the very first shots and I need to see the minute variation in point of impact in order to better my skills.

It appears that you are an opinion, as I have heard everyone has one. Your elitist attitude and snide comments are not what keeps new shooters from participating here. With your approach, the only contributors here will be people like you, but maybe you have had lots of practice talking to yourself.

Dial the point of impact a minute high so you don't shoot out the aiming point.

I know this doesn't really fit into the Savage vs Remington debate, but if you want a nice shooting low budget rifle you really should take a good look at Tikka. I love my 700 just as much as my 1911, but my fiance's Tikka feels like it was custom made to fit in my hands. Granted, aftermarket parts are harder to find, and spending $60 for a 5 round clip is BEYOND insane... But that Tikka shoots like a dream.

Now, as for Savage vs Remington, I can only give my input for the latter. I have *NEVER* had a single problem with my 700. She feels great and shoots straight.
