Tactical Carbine would be fine. The problem is that the "Colt's Law Enforcement Carbine" rollmark is identical to that of the 6920. If they changed it to anything that doesn't include "Law Enforcement", "AR-15", "Match Target" or "Sporter" then it would be fine. Or they could just add "6940" to the current rollmark, but I'm sure that by itself would still leave some people queasy.
I'd agree with this... leaving off the "law enforcement" would be the nicer part.

OR they could write Colt Model 6940 and then say anything else - directly specifying the model would preclude someone from saying the rest is anything but chatter. In fact, there would be nothing illegal about removing the rest (anything but the make, model, SN) from your own gun.

The ffl's interpretation has alwaze been the acid test for me. If the shipping and receiving ffls are comfy that something is off list- then it's a go as far as I'm concerned.

I never thought of this- so you can remove certain parts of the rollmark without affecting the legally required info?

I got one from CWS for my own personal collection because it was a Colt. Then I realized that I already have a LMT MRP CQB and a DD M4 and I really don't need another 16" railed rifle. So I put it on the rack last week.

A guy came in and bought it yesterday.

I am pretty sure I logged it into my bound book as a 6940, I will put it on the 4473 as a 6940, I will put it on the receipt as a 6940, and I will put it on the legal lowers agreement as a 6940.

Now I can't speak for the rest of the Calguns Foundation, but I would vote yes to back up anyone who gets popped for having a legit 6940. We have already won because the law is too vague once, I am willing to try it again.

Sorry if this has been covered...but why don't you just buy the 6940 upper and throw it on a lower of your choice? I just wanted the upper for the monolithic rail so ordered it off gunbroker to my doorstep and threw it on an M&P lower.

Or is it the full colt setup you're looking for...

Of course, mere possession of a listed lower is not a crime. Please note that the law specifically refers to semi-auto RIFLES which are listed. As redneckshootist just pointed out here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=312241 , it would be legal to have a pistol built on a listed lower since, it is not a "rifle". Of course, this is purely academic and, should not be attempted because, there are too many other options out there.

                COLT 6940

Just buy a Colt 6940 upper and Mate it with any CA Legal Lower with a Bullet Button. KD Lowers are way better than a Colt lower. Better Machining, finish and fit. Then you know you are LEGAL HERE.

I got my magic letter and bought a 6940 a couple of months ago... then took it to Thunder ranch with an aimpoint comp4s mounted...
I didn't shoot any better than the wife with her noveske light rifle...
I wouldn't skirt the edge until we get this AW stuff worked through the courts...
most of my fellow officers bought noveske rifles...they are really happy...
my colt is very reliable but it is a bit heavier than I would prefer...maybe someday the gun fairy will leave enough money under my pillow and I'll buy another noveske upper to put on the colt...

noveske is made by the same machines colt uses. CMT, and there is even fewer forges out there.

I was told that Kaiser makes Noveske, among others. That was all I needed to hear when buying a lower. Actually, all I needed to hear was $109, but whatever.

I found a 6940 kit sans lower for $800 through an LEO buddy and was tempted to build it up on a decidedly GTG lower......That's the closest I think I'll get to a Colt in CA.
