Hunt what with it ? I no longer hunt rabbits, squirrels, never hunted coyotes etc and .223 just don't work for antelope and deer in rough weather where I hunt. Wyoming says its legal, but I consider .223/5.56 not up to the job there. Target shoot, maybe, when the ranges get off of the mask BS in the Bay Area etc. Too far to Manteca for target shooting, just a trip to zero the scopes on my other rifles before the fall seasons. Calif hunting is finished forever for me. A friend uses his AR 10 there, Wyoming, for deer and antelope, big difference.

Who said anything about an AR-15? Who said anything about .223/5.56? Who said anything about only deer and antelope hunting?

The OP said "AR." An AR-10 is an AR. So is an AR-15 chambered in deer or antelope cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC II, .450 Bushmaster, and .350 Legend.

Even if the OP did mean deer with a .223, it's not unheard of here in CA. With all hunting, shot placement trumps displacement. In many parts of the US, .223 is the favored pig cartridge. The Inuit Indians favor the .223 for polar bear, seal, and sea lion.

There's also plenty of varmint and predator hunting to be done with the .223 in the lower 48. Talking about varminting, there's also rimfire AR's in .22LR, .17 WSM, and .17 HMR.

The OP said hunt with your AR. Many of us do. I shot my last whitetail buck (8 pts) with an AR (LR308). My friend shot his last whitetail with an AR in 6.5 Grendel (220 yard shot, DRT).

You can lighten it up dramatically with a lightweight barrel, titanium carrier, lightweight buffer, lightweight buttstock/handguard, and lightweight mount/optic.

I've got a 62 grain Tac-X load at 2800 fps that I might try not pronghorn.

That being said, I've got lighter rifles that are more comfortable to carry chambered in better cartridges, so maybe I won't bother.
