My home defense long gun is a M1 carbine with Winchester 110 grain soft/hollow point. If I need more then that after I fight my way to a safe, it's a RAW FAL with 147 gr NATO.

I like to call that "social use." Sounds sort of you know, friendlier, as in "Welcome to my home. Allow me to serve you a heaping helping of 00. You're welcome to seconds, of course, but for most people, it's really not necessary."

More modern designed ammo bullets ( Gold Dots, 75-77gr HP numerous others ) offer better , more consistent terminal performance over FMJ ammo.

The FMJ bullet is very yaw dependent. And that is critical to that same FMJ bullet fragmenting.

Go to the pistol-forum.com and read up on ammo choices.

I keep Black hills ammo in the mags. but that would be about the last thing that I would ever grab in home defense. It would be more like massive civil unrest.

Accessibility is the main reason. I have several smaller "handgun" size safes here and there but the ones large enough for a rifle are in another room. If I were in that room I would use a rifle, but that is only one room vs all the others with other firearms available in them.

If I have to use my go to CQB AR, then I don't care about my bullets because probably **** got pretty crazy.

I have a Ruger PCC 9mm with gold dots, light, red dot and 33 rounders for my go to HD. Sound will not completely kill my ears. Back up is one of mine 8+1 Mossberg shotguns and different pistols. Just depends on threat and time. Anything else in my collection would way overpentrate, be too loud, etc etc.

Another vote for one of the lead-free compressed metal bullets - Barnes Varmint Grenade or the Nosler or Hornady. That might expend all it's energy in the target, but I suppose the litigation angle would be steep !
