My 16" Faxon Pencil was a budget conscious lightweight build that is now my wife's do-it-all gun with a 1-4x SWFA SS on it.
My 18" LaRue PredatAR 5.56 with 3-9x VXR-Patrol WAS my go-to midweight SPR inspired gun for mid to long range.

I say "was" because my 18" Alexander Arms Grendel has quickly become my favorite mid to long range toy. It bucks the wind better, hits the steel much harder, and still has mild enough recoil that I can see my hits through the 3-15x SWFA scope. The 5.56 LaRue is still a great rifle, but I have a lot more fun with the greater first round hit probability with the Grendel and the authoritative "GONG" of the 6.5 projectiles (versus the "ping" of the 5.56) at 400+ yards. These days when I only have time to shoot a couple guns at the range or in the desert, I take a .22LR and my Grendel.

Two factors for long range shooting are where does the bullet transition to subsonic and destabilize, and how much cross wind drift can the ballistic coefficient help to minimize.
The 6.5's have better BC vs 5.56 but being able to read a cross wind and adjust for it just takes practice even if you try to shoot a 22LR at 200 yards in wind.
Or you can shoot at the perfect range where the wind is always at your back.
