Yes, if you build a and then pin a muzzle device before you find out all that stuff you bought from no name brands on Black Friday is crap, then yeah you messed up.

But if you build it right from the get go you have no reason to change anything and you have an AR that has an OAL 1-2" shorter than 16" barrel with a muzzle device.

Build one AR15 5.56 with a 16 inch barrel and one AR-308 DPMS compatible with a 18/20 inch barrel.

Put all the goodies on the AR. Quality scope on the 308.

      AR 15 5.56 will also fire 223.

      AR308 (AR10) will fire 7.62 or 308.

You will require MAG LOKs for both unless you go featureless. Don't forget the 10 round mags.

You may want to consider an adjustable gas block on the 308.

I'm gathering the parts now with 80% lowers.

Ensure you follow the CA DOJ laws.

Hello OP, my $0.02 go with complete upper and mil spec LPK and keep it simple for your first build. I used Aero parts for mine.

You can spend $$ later after you know your preferences.

Also, I would build up 1 rifle first (maybe 5.56 with RDS?) and use the learnings for your second rifle.

I could not sole source my builds due to the panic buyers. My uppers are from 5D tactical, lowers from both 5D and 80% lowers, jig from 5D, lower guts from PSA. I'm still waiting on parts. Started this 2 months ago. Good luck and have fun.

Maybe an AR rifle and pistol?
            For the rifle,
As long as the barrel is over 16”, and “overall rifle length is over 30”, a fixed mag or featureless choice is a personal one.
Depending on the caliber, longer lengths will grant damage at distance bonuses, and mobility/handling minuses.

            For the pistol,
Franklin Armory sells the CA7, CA11, AND CA12, all of which are the only AR15 platform firearms on the CA handgun list. They make very high quality products..
There are also a few FFLs with manufacturing licenses in the state of CA that can sell you a custom AR pistol. I would highly recommend Gunslingers in SD.
As far as I understand, after registration you can use ANY semi auto upper receiver, AS LONG AS they are UNDER 16” and they are FIXED MAGAZINE.

You picked a really bad time to get into this, unfortunately.

It’s getting really hard to find guns, finding all of the necessary components to build a gun from scratch is going to be even harder.

That said, forget about AR pistols.

Try to find a rifle with a 14.5” barrel and a pinned muzzle device, or a 16” lightweight barrel - that should be your short range gun.

As for longer ranges, forget about 5.56

Buy an AR-10 or a DPMS pattern .308

Even better and less expensive, get a good bolt gun and put decent glass on it.

At longer distances you want a fat bullet that carries its energy down range.

5.56 is barely audible when you hit a steel silhouette at 600 yards, you can definitely hear .308

I thought it took a super long time to get a serial number from DoJ?

There were aero stripped lowers in stock on their website this morning and primary arms and brownells also had m5 lowers for sale recently.

It might be faster to find a stripped lower with a serial number than to wait on DoJ.

How accurate do you want to be? I think a lot of that would depend on the quality of the upper. That's really the heart of the accuracy of the rifle.
