Ideas for bringing the HK SP5 into California

Hello everyone, I know there is already a thread for the SP5 but I wanted to post this for better visibility. I was able to purchase an HK SP5 and had been in contact with the seller before they were in stock regarding the possibility of making it California compliant. I know what parts I need to turn it into a California legal firearm (8.5inch Barrel extension pinned and welded to make 16inch barrel, fixed stock to bring overall length to at least 30inch, and either mag latch fixed magazine device or solar tactical grip wrap) but I'm not sure if the seller is going to be able to pin and weld the barrel extension. If that ends up being the case, they state they are willing to ship the firearm to a shop that will be able to do the work. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding where I can send the firearm to have the work done so I can legally take possession of it?

Are you referring to the new SP5K (PISTOL)? Because that is not on the (pistol) roster so you can't buy it and bring it in (in any configuration). (as a pistol).

Now you may be trying to have it converted from a pistol to a rifle before it gets here? Now sure, but that may be tricky because the MP5 rifle is banned by name as an AW (no work around there). OR you can claim that it is NOT an MP5 by rather an SP5 so not banned by name. If THAT is the case, then you just have to work with PC30515 and fix the mag, pin the stock, weld on a large muzzle break. But that will leave you with a carbine that you will have to load through the ejection port (a real PITA) - better to go with the grip wrap in that case. Maybe try to find an actual 16" barrel rather than an 8.5" muzzle brake that does nothing for accuracy. If it has to be that long (and it does) why not at least get the accuracy of a 16" barrel.

Give us more detail on what your intentions are.

So I purchased the new HK SP5 pistol (not the SP5K) , I am trying to have it converted to a rifle so I can take possession of it but I need to find a shop that can pin and weld the barrel extension for me. I'm looking for recommendations as to who can do this. As far as being banned by name, this is a new model so the only models banned by name were the HK 91, 93, 94 and PSG-1.

Ok - sounds good. You may just want to get a full length barrel rather than such a long brake. (you'll get more velocity and accuracy).

Sounds like it'll be easier and cheaper to just move to a free state.

That is going to be one gimped-up firearm.

                I too would recommend Phil
                Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

                    Yes,

And as an add on, instead of importing the rifle to the wrong side of the Comsocialsanctuary wall,
instead, export yourself from behind it.

After some consideration and speaking to Audiophil2, I have decided to back out and wait for either the 16inch version SP5L or maybe even consider one of the clones. The hope was that I could put a barrel extension on and potentially SBR it if I ever moved it to a free state but it's a lot of hoops to go through and the accuracy would be majorly affected so it isn't worth it to me. Thanks everyone for all of the input.

Edit: now I'm reconsidering, bottom line I won't go through with this if the accuracy is going to suck, I don't mind going featureless and or fix mag for this firearm since it is reversible. As far as the faux suppressor, it seems like the Title II Arms is designed to pin to itself so if I ever leave this state (not happening anytime soon as far as I can tell) then I could legally SBR it without damaging the barrel

Basically only two ways available (unless you are LEO and plan only to use it for dept use):

                        Featureless rifle
                        Fixed magazine pistol

If you like to shoot it a lot, the featureless route can be practical to use but ruins the look. Does it still make sense to get a factory HK gun when the barrel has been extended and it sports a grip fin?

If you want it to look factory to pet once in a while or to show to friends, the Maglatch appears to disturb the appearance the least. Shooting it won't be fun, but at least it is quickly convertible to a free state setting, right?

                        .

These look easier to pin/weld on.

HK may never bring a 16 inch into the U.S. If you move later and want to turn a 16 incher into an sbr, it will be a lot harder and more expensive. You'd have to get the barrel sawed off. HK barrels are put in to stay.

Why would the accuracy be "majorly affected"? Because of something attached to the barrel? 9 mm's aren't that accurate in the first place. The MP5-SD has about a 10 inch silencer on the end of the barrel and you don't hear accuracy complaints about it.

I was looking at the titleii firearms faux suppressor but does anyone have any experience shooting one that's pinned and welded? ld gladly go that route but not if it's going to degrade accuracy.
