Giving a Galil Ace some love: Making it look more AK-ish?

    Hey y'all

So, I have been looking into getting an AK recently, but during that time my friend sold me on the idea of a Galil Ace. Left side charging handle, a dust cover shield that moves to keep the action free of crap, bolt locks after last round, ambidexterous safety, minor improvements to the proven AK operating system, STANAG magazine compatibility so I don't have to buy new mags, 5.56 compatibility so I don't have to begin stocking a round I haven't used. Everything just feels so nice and tight and quality too, I love the milled receiver on this.

    (Image borrowed from RifleGear.)

It may seem a bit silly, but I kind of wish it looked more classic AK-ish. I have enough mall-operator tacticool low-speed-high-drag AR stuff. Don't think there's anything I can do about that polymer magwell since it's made for STANAG magazine compatibility IIRC, but I'd be happy enough switching out the fore-end and stock.

Anyone know anything about Galil furniture? The only thing I've found so far is a ACE stock adapter by KNS, which gets me kind of in the right direction, although a wood stock would be preferable. https://www.knsprecisioninc.com/prod...folding-combo/ Can't seem to find anything for the front rail that isn't tacticool (a la RS Regulate, Midwest Industries). Heck I'd take wood panels that slip onto Picatinny sections, the plastic round handguard sections on a Galil Ace slip right off revealing Picatinny rails underneath.

    Thanks in advance for suggestions.

nice rifle, but why not get one in 7.62x39? 5.56 is anemic

I think they look good with the triangle style folding stocks.

Primarily because I am already stocked up on 5.56 magazines and ammo. If I wanted to expand into 7.62x39 ammo/magazines/accessories I would have just gotten an Arsenal, since they're cheaper with far more market support. It was mostly a decision made for personal practicality. When I got rid of my Romanian AK many years ago, I got rid of all the ammo and related accessories too.

Not writing off a 7.62x39 future, just that if I do go that route, I will likely get one of the myriad of multiple easily obtainable AK platforms out there. Improvements or no, a regular AK can be had in the realm of 6-800, and I had to justify the price jump of a Galil Ace in my mind somehow.

Same (although wouldn't be folding due to state rules, but luckily KNS makes a fixed one). Hence why I'm likely to go with the KNS setup, but still wondering if we could take it a step further. Wood stock and handguard would be entertainingly ideal.

Because 77gr 5.56 outperforms 7.62x39 in every category.

I mounted an original Galil stock on mine. A small amount of adjustment is required to allow the stock to fold (I'm out of CA); if you're staying featureless, that's not required. Haven't decided which handguard to go with yet.

I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Check out Krebs Custom Guns. They're starting to do some Galil Ace guns.

The only thing I'd change is a Dead Air KeyMo mount (or the KeyMo Micro when it comes out) or J-Mac's RRD-2C KeyMo as I'm heavily invested in Dead Air cans. Their IMS system commits you to Liberty cans.

I know, boutique overpriced guns, what can Krebs do that you can't do in your garage, etc. But, hey, Krebs Custom guns keep their value as a collectors item and I value them a lot more than my own garage hacks.

Hey I appreciate the suggestion, I wouldn't mind trigger work and such. Not much options out there so if someone is doing Galils out there, more power to them.

beanz2 I like the way you think, but California unfortunately does not. Might fly if mine was a CA registered pistol but mine is most definitely a long gun.

I understand, but at least the two I showed may give you an idea what can be done to the Ace. Removal of the lower plastic portion and fitting the original Galil mag release will make it look a lot like an AK.

Krebs does not take custom one-off projects, but if you haven't bought your Ace yet, giving them a call may not hurt. Who knows if they have Galil Ace carbines in the pipeline. When I was in CA, they did make my guns CA compliant, but things were much simpler back then.

If you have your carbine already, there are several AK builders who may work on the Galil Ace. I recommend Matt Yeamans from MY Guns. Troy Sellars from InRange is an excellent builder too.

Id get rid of all my traditional AK’s before I got rid of my galil ace. Personally I’d keep it as designed, maybe swap to a non adjustable folding skeleton stock, and grab a wasr if you need a traditional AK. Have fun, it’s an awesome rifle.

Thanks everyone and nitroxdiver for the comments. I settled on doing that. Going to go with the KNS ACE triangle fixed stock, and RS Regulate handguard, and I'm eyeing a specific Zastava to scratch the "traditional" itch.

Could also be a state that allows pistols but not SBR's but doesnt have an *** of a roster like CA. Some state that hates freedom but doesn't outright balk at it like CA politicians.

I know some people just like the ease-of-travel with them too. That kiddo Lucas at T-Rex Arms said in a co-video with Garand Thumb that he didn't go for an SBR like "Flannel Daddy" did because of issues with legality when crossing state lines, since he travels a lot.

A pistol with a forward vertical grip is an NFA item in every state.
