For what it's worth, the only guy to shoot Rifleman at an apple seed I went to was shooting a scoped M1A.

Definitely go with the wood stock.

I have a stainless with their synthetic stock and while the recoil pad was awesome on it, it was not a good feeling stock. I found a newer wood take-off and it's so much cooler and better feeling

I love my M1As, a Scout and National Match. That being said, you can scope them but they werent really designed for an optic. I had a 3-9x40 on the NM for a while and got tired of the stock being so low on my chest, it was slipping all the time and the shoulder rest was uncomfortable so I just took the optic off. I got a reddot on the Scout model and it is a pretty good setup. Maybe a long eye relief scout scope is the best way to go but personally I dont recommend an optic other than a reddot. So Im not a hater but definitely a realist.

I am looking for opinions on this rifle for target shooting, perhaps competitions.
Buy it before Gavin grabs it.

Everybody needs a FAL "Right Arm of the Free World", HK G3 used by nearly every country eschewing the FAL, and M1A because it's American.

We won the Cold War when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, and should celebrate by owning First World service rifles of that era.

Good buy. I've had a variety of M1A's over the years. Loaded stainless is the best bang for your buck.
