Therefore, if your semi-auto centerfire rifle has a "bullet button" style magazine lock it needs to be modified so that it is no longer considered an assault weapon.

This can be done by doing one of the following:
    A. Making it into a semi-auto centerfire rifle with a fixed 10 round magazine.
    B. Making it into a featureless semi-auto centerfire rifle.
    C. Making it into a rimfire rifle.
    D. Making it into a manually operated (bolt/lever/pump) rifle.
    E. Disassemble it into parts and never assemble them while in CA.

Legally a RAW can only be sold to a CA FFL dealer with an assault weapons permit or to an out-of-state buyer through an out-of-state FFL dealer.

If the registered owner of a RAW dies, then the executor of the owner' estate has 90 days to do one of the following:
    A. Sell it to a CA FFL dealer with an assault weapons permit.
    B. Take it out-of-state for storage on behalf of the inheritor.
    C. Take it out-of-state to transfer it through an out-of-state FFL dealer.
    D. Surrender it to law enforcement for destruction.

    Nope.
Assault weapons registration is a different process than standard firearm registration.

Only semi-auto firearms with "bullet button" style magazine locks that were legally acquired from 2001-2016 are eligible to be registered as an assault weapon before 07-01-2018.

A receiver that is acquired in 2017-2018 will be registered via the DROS process as a "long gun, rifle, receiver" and it is not eligible to register as an assault weapon.
^Using that receiver to make a semi-auto firearm with a "bullet button" style magazine lock is considered (felony) manufacture of an illegal assault weapon and submitting it to be registered as an assault weapon is documenting the illegal manufacture.
Thank you. Appreciate the time you took to compose your post.

This is a good idea. Gunbroker is a good resource. Never used Armslist or Gunsamerica but those are other options.

You could sell it here in CA. You just need to add/remove some parts to make it compliant if you only have a bullet button on it.

To Go Featureless: Change out the hider for a break on the upper, add a fixed stock (magpul makes one that fits the tube you already have...or just remove the stock), put a grip fin on the rear grip (or remove it), make sure you don't have a forward grip or any other evil features...and you're good.

To Go Featured: Replace the bullet button with the new AR MAGLOCK.

Or break it all up into parts like you originally thought. Except, I would sell them all seperately. Probably worth more in individual parts.

Personally I would keep the lower and sell the upper. Which I did last month with my S&W M&P-15 SPORT I. Did not get as much as I would have liked for the upper. But I have a brand name lower that I added a brand name upper to that I like better than the one it came with. The way things are going, the major brands likely won't be selling their ARs here in California forever. Making me more appreciative of what I have than I might otherwise be.

Op, which part of SoCal are you in? If you decide to go featureless I may be able to help out with some parts. Pm if you like.

But it sounds like this is already registered as an AW. Would need to deregister before sale. No?

I thought about making it featureless.

            - Replace grip with a Monsterman grip (or no grip at all)
            - Remove bullet button

Or...just sell the lower and add some 'parts' for free (can I give away the barrel with a muzzle break or does that have to come off?).

Other option is selling out of state. Add in the cost of an FFL, shipping and sell it at a deep discount,... Such a f-ing PIA to comply with state law.
