My long term gun storage plan

I have a few rifles (more than a few actually) that I never seem to shoot because I tend to shoot my favorites. I regularly take them out and oil them and check for rust. A few are more prone to rust than others and I am getting tired of the routine. So, my plan for long term storage is to oil up my rifle, put it into a food storage back, throw in a homemade silica gel pack, moisture indicator card, date the bag, and vacuum seal the bag shut. That should preserve it for at least a year (maybe longer). The plastic is pretty thick and shouldn't puncture to easily. I can clearly see if the bag is keeping out moisture by the card. If I ever need to get access to the rifle, I can cut the bag open and it is ready to go. No cosmoline to clean off or any other heavy grease preservative. I will keep them in my safe where they usually sit, but it is one more step at keeping the moisture off of them. My safe is pretty air tight, but I tend to open it and close it often and it does let in moisture. I do keep a large amount of silica gel in the safe to catch moisture, but they need to be recharged regularly. My favorite rifles to shoot at the moment don't need to be protected as much because they are stainless steel or are of the AR variety and they are pretty whether proof.

    What do you guys think?

Here is my little Marlin 60 in its new bag.

Supplies needed are a vacuum sealer, a roll of plastic for the sealer, silica gel, and moisture indicator cards. I already had all the supplies so it wasn't any extra cost to me to try this out.

Definitely a sound practice. Well-oiled weapons stored in an airtight bag will last indefinitely with no further maintenance. That's pretty much what the military does, though they use heavy grease which is a PITA to clean off. Anyone who's been issued a new weapon can attest to this.

Should be good for years. I stored some guns in this manor for a particular 10 year period. At the sunset of that period, I recovered my guns and they were in great shape.

My silica gel I got from Target. You can get an 8 pound jug of it for under $10. I just made my own little pack of it and poked a bunch holes in it.

I've been long-term storing ammo like that for years now. Works great!

YES!!!!... another reason to use my food vacuum sealer, and to more proof to show my wife that it was worth buying. THANK YOU!!!!!

Not sure if she will buy the whole "sealing up rifles/pistols" as worth the purchase...... but the money savings on freezing "family packs" of meat sold her.

Great idea. I might have to give that a shot with some ammo. Might do that to a few rifles as well.

I think I read somewhere not to vacuum seal ammo, I have no idea if its true or not however.
ETA: After some googling, looks like people do it.
