    .308/.260 AR

So I plan on building yet another AR of the DPMS .308 type. I already have a heavy 24 inch one for target shooting (15.5 lbs) but now I NEED one mainly for hunting so it needs to be not so heavy. I would also like to use this baby in AR15Barrels' long range shooting club if possible.

I was originally thinking of going with .308 in a 18.5 inch barrel but then I thought that it may not have optimal velocity to make it to 1K without having to drop a rediculous amount that would be beyond my scopes adjustment capabilities. After considering this, I thought about the .260 Remington in the same barrel length. Would the high BC 6.5mm bullets be pushed fast enough out of a 18.5 inch barrel to even make a noticable diffference at ranges betweek 800-1K yds?

What barrel length and caliber combination would create a happy medium for hunting and long range shooting without being too heavy? If it helps I will be using a LMT SOPMOD stock (most likely), Fulton lower, Fulton or DPMS A4 upper, and possibly a Daniel defense Lite Rail 12.0. Thanks

This is probably not what you want to hear, but a hunting gun and a long range precision rifle are about on polar opposites of the gun-weight spectrum.

Longrange precision guns are heavy pigs to sit still on the ground all day.
Hunting guns should be lightweights so you can carry them all day long.

Rebarrel your heavy 308 into a heavy 260 for target shooting if you reload.
Otherwise, keep it a 308 if you have to buy factory ammo.

Build an 18" 308 to hunt with.
I could even cut back your 24" 308 and lighten it a bunch.
I have a 24" DPMS 260 bull barrel in stock.

^^^^Yeah i figured that. I guess there is not a happy medium . I may have to have you rebarrel my long range AR to .260 one of these days. What barrel would you recommend besides the DPMS one? Thanks Randall!

And when is the next long range shooting club get together?

If Fulton has a Krieger barrel in 260, that would be good.

Next CaPRC long range shoot is this saturday.

Thanks Randall. Do you happen to have access to a .308 velocity/barrel length chart? I want to know how much velocity I am giving up by going with an 18.5 inch barrel since I am leaning towards that length.
