    Fabrique National FAL

    Hello,

When I was a lot younger, I remember hearing my dad talk to his friend about a FAL rifle he (the friend) bought in California. He said there was a thing where he had to register the rifle in the state of California or the rifle would be illegal. Thinking about this now is sort of weird, but I am wondering about this. The friend I remember was a sort of a conspiracy type person so it could be totally untrue anyway. Is there any truth to that?

Senate Bill 23 in 1999 effective as of Jan 1, 2000 (dates are off the top of my head and may be off a bit). Unless FNFAL was named under Roberti Roos ban in 1989. Are you not aware of the California "assault weapons ban" and registration requirements?

If you haven't heard about these laws they cover a great number of centerfire rifles with detachable magazines and other "evil/banned" features. Please see the "flowchart" link at the top of the page.

      Interesting first post.

FN FALs are banned by name today but could have been registered as an aw back in the day.

You can own an off list FAL today. Please take your time and read all the info on this sight and all will be revealed to you.

There are many flavors of FAL, actual FN made FAL's are less common than a SAR-48 or a DSA FAL.

While only the FN FAL was banned by name, any of the various flavors could have been registered because of it's "evil" features.

By the same token, the flavors not listed in the ban could be legally kept without registration if they were modified in to a non-AW configuration (commonly by using a fixed 10 round magazine).

Go to DSarms.com for probably the best CA legal FAL you can get. There are a number of ways of making them legal, there's a bullet button type of thing or the DSA method of fixing a mag and loading with stripper clips. I love the things - totally reliable and solid.

The springfield SAR-48 is also banned by name.

Oh, I forgot about that, but there is the SAR-4800 which is essentially the same thing with a thumb hole stock.

A FAL made by FN in any configuration would have had to have been registered in the first AW registration period.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

Yep- the original FN made FAL was banned in 1989. My uncle has a 'real' one he regged wayyy back in the day. I'm still jealous!

I have my Imbel I regged in 99, but it's just not quite the same
