Adding A Bullet Button To A Featureless AR

Can I put a bullet button on a featureless AR and register it as an assault weapon before July 1, 2018?

Why? You don't have to register featureless.

I have big hands and have to use a grip extender plus an oversize grip to shoot comfortably.

So you want to add a bullet button then put certain features back onto your rifle.
Thought you just wanted to add a bullet button and have all the featureless parts still.

Did you lawfully-possess a newly-legislated assault weapon prior to 31 Dec 2016? If you did, it had a bullet button on it.....

            https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/bullet-b...assault-weapon
Assembly Bill 1135 and Senate Bill 880 require that any person who, from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2016, inclusive, lawfully possessed an assault weapon that does not have a fixed magazine, as defined in Penal Code section 30515, including those weapons with an ammunition feeding device that can be readily removed from the firearm with the use of a tool (commonly referred to as a bullet-button) must register the firearm before January 1, 2018. However, Assembly Bill 103 has since extended the registration period from January 1, 2018 to July 1, 2018.
If it was featureless in 2016, and didn't have a bullet button, to put one on now might appear to some as to create a new assault weapon after 1/1/2017.

That might be construed to be problematic.

But, you have until 7/1/2018 to decide.

Individuals with eligible bullet-button assault weapons were required to register their firearms with the Department of Justice by June 30, 2018. A federal court (Sharp v. Becerra, E.D. Cal. Mar. 29, 2021) re-opened the registration window for 90 days, starting on January 13, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. PST and ending on April 12, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. PDT.

It did not sound right so I thought I would check here first.
                  Holy CRAP!

That would put you into adult go-away camp.

                    No

The bullet button is not a feature, and the DOJ regs indicate that registration applications for featureless will be rejected.

Further, it has been illegal since Jan 1 to assemble a featured build THAT WOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR REGISTRATION AS INQUIRED ABOUT IN THIS THREAD

Sorry... if you really WANT to register (why?) you missed the boat by 12 months.

How nice of him to advise his customers that it's OK to commit a felony.

In that case, the registration would be denied because the gun was not DROS'd to you before this year.

That is of course a concern. Delrin pins are available that will shift the wear from the receiver to the pin.

There are also options for top-loading without opening the assembly available from Bear Flag Defense and Mean Arms.

Interesting that you edited his statement to take issue with it.

The question I would then pose to you is, "Can you build a featured rifle tomorrow, with a fixed mag, THAT WOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR REGISTRATION?"

I'm gonna bet the answer is "no".
