Wearing muffs while shooting, is not working for me.

i wear prescription glasses, struggled similarly. i employ both ear plugs as well as electronic muffs.
On the stock side i do have to push up the ear cup so the muffs are a bit cockeyed/tilted with the ear cup abutting my ear canal.
as noted above, tugging on the ear lobe helps inset the plugs. the electronics/battery connections on the MSAs tend to be fragile so baby the muffs, they're really expensive.Last edited by mtenenhaus; 10-24-2017, 6:29 PM.Comment

He came to a class I took at Firearms Training Associates at Raahauges and took the measurements.
If I had been willing to wait they would have been ready the same day, but he said he could mail them to me -- which he did.
They are terrific.
Good luck
Edit:
Looks like the filtered plugs went up to $100.
Still a bargain.Sent from Free AmericaComment

I use the Silynx Clarus Pro. While probably not for everyone, it works well for me and I can connect my cellphone to it.Comment

Most ear muffs hurt my ears after a while, and even the low profile ones get in the way of good cheek weld.
I have the molded plugs which work well, but I have a lot of trouble getting them in - I have really narrow ear canals with like 90 degree bend.
So once I get those puppies in, I leave them in all day if necessary.Comment

I stopped using headsets like Sordins or COMTAC II/III's because of the added difficulty in getting a consistent cheekweld. My preferred electronic earpro/comms setup is the INVISIO X50. I find the in ear design to be much more comfortable for extended use as well.

I had similar problem with the Howard Leight muffs. I saw a show with Jerry Miculek and he explained that he always wears muffs and plugs for extra protection. That is what I do now, and when the muffs don't make a perfect seal, plugs are there as back up. Now that I'm more accustom to the plugs the muffs aren't really needed. I also find the plugs block a lot more sound than the muffs, which means I can shoot for longer without getting annoyed by too much loud gun fire. Funny thing is now the plus sit so deep in my ear, when I pull them out they're covered in nasty ear wax. Yum!
Ultimately I think the issue with the muff seal should be addressed by adjusting your cheek weld position on the stock. I'd first try to adjust your body geometry so that your neck isn't craned over when getting into position. This is what I found to be affecting my muff seal. Maybe try a cheek riser pad to get your cheek weld up off the portion of stock that is breaking the seal. AR stocks are pretty unergonomic as far as stocks go.
hehehe...he said "muff seal"Comment

I found Decibullz at Walmart.com are custom molded, 31dB protection $25 is very comfortable.

I see they now have a set with filters for shooting.Comment

After a number of years being frustrated with foam plugs and just using muffs, I finally figured out my problem with plugs. My ear canals have a tight bend and so the plugs just can't go in very far. I finally figured out that if I squish 'em down and insert them backwards (fat end first), the plugs work pretty darn well.Comment
