FAL fixed mag/top loading

Has anyone done this? You can get a top cover designed for use with stripper clips.

If so, what do you use to lock the magazine in place?

This would most likely be on a DSA 18" Voyager.

DSA does, or at least did, make that exact model for the California market a while ago. They used a small tack weld at the front of the magazine to "lock" it in place, and used a sliding stripper clip top cover.

The Canadian top cover has a stripper clip guide built right into itself. Pin a mag in and voila, you got a good looking CA FAL.

Yeah, that's it. That's the Canadian top cover. Note you'll also have to have two small notches cut on the inside of the upper reciever to hold it in place. Nothing, major, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch long. Not noticeable on the outside at all.

Just remove the mag release spring, drill a hole through the other side so it goes through the cavity where the spring was held, tap it, and use a set screw to go through the release and put pressure on the mag to hold it in place. You can notch the mag if you want to just to make sure the screw will make it impossible to come out, but you really don't have to. I red locktited the screw in.

In particular, it was a small weld that built a bead.

The weld is in a small channel where your mag release actuates, or rather, plunges/rotates into when it releases the mag.
This bead disallows the mag release to pivot, thus disallowing mag release function, ergo, disallowing mag release.

If you take off the dust cover and BCG, you will see the channel.

There is no reason you couldn't mix up a little JB weld and dab it in there and then file down to where you are happy with it.

Once the bead is sized, put the magazine in, then assemble the mag release around it, and done.

California sucks.

IDK, never tried, but it top loads very easily.

Jesus,just go featureless,grip wrap the pg, swap the combe device for a fake one,Nott all holes drilled out,and call it good.

They make a mag release box that goes around the mag release so it functions like the one for the AK...uze a bullet or screwdriver to release the mag..if you insist on the stripper clip cover,yes stick with the Canadian one..
