You can drill another hole, but you can't mount another gas block or front sight because the barrel diameter is too small when you move forward to the mid-length gas port position on most barrels.
The exception to this rule would be on bull barrels where you have the option to turn them down to a standard diameter or on CMMG M10 multi-role barrels that have 3 gas block seats.

Wow, that's exactly what I was looking for and a lot of information too.

It looks like I would have to get some kind of fancy buffer to go heavier than a rifle buffer.

If they drilled the gas hole to work with an H2 buffer that should be a pretty close match to a rifle buffer so I should be OK. If it's not drilled that big, the ideal buffer weight will be less which should be moving in the right direction and if it doesn't work well I can always enlarge the gas hole a bit.

What about hydraulic buffers, or buffer ends made of different materials that are supposed to soften the impulse? Are these useful in reducing stress in a carbine system, or just snake oil?

The entire thread dealt with a single round, heck it could have been talking about a single shot self extractor. Whatever the case, it has been stated and remains true to this day that reliability is like this:

                  Carbine < Mid-Length < Rifle

So when you can have a rifle length gas system you get that, if you HAD to you'd go to a Mid-Length, than if the length won't allow it you go to a carbine gas system. Than if your really really crazy and want a super shorty than you have to go to the abbreviated gas system. Nowhere does it say that if you CAN have a longer gas system should you go for the shorter.
Haha. u just reminded me that I need to study for my chem midterm.
