And how do you know your upper can be relied on. Just cause it has Noveske on it doesnt mean it will be 100%. You can better your chances of getting a good performing rifle by going with a well researched and tested rig. The fact is unless you run your gun hard you will never know if it will be there if you need it. Any manufacturer can make a mistake or get some sub par componets and miss it in QC. The fact is you dont know unless you try it. Have you tried your rifle in a SHTF senario? Trips to the range with one shot a second in sunny conditions with a barrel maked Noveske doesnt =GTG when SHTF.

My advice is to not just ask the question. Do as much research as possible. Check out M4carbine.net and AR15.com as well as cal guns. Ive had stag, CMMG and LMT rifles. I still have the LMT.

My SHTF gun is the gun that i have used the most without any malfunctions! Regardless of Brand. But from I have read and I am new, i have seen that
Colt, Noveske and LMT have been the top tier AR's. Only thing is, being that LMT and Colt have been a military service rifle, I am assuming they have been tested and tried in combat. So I am guessing that an LMT and or Colt would be go to go from factory!! Thats just my opinion from what i have read and learned.

Any thoughts on LARUE uppers? I've read good things about their Stealth uppers but no personal experience since I don't own one.

Popular "best" brands include Colt, Noveske, LMT, BCM, Sabre Defense, etc... The best brand is the one YOU feel confident with if your life depended on it which I take it you are asking. Whatever brand you buy, run some rounds through it. Try different ammo & see what it likes. As uclaplinker suggests, the bread & butter of the gun is the bolt & barrel. You'll never hear of a barrel splitting, breaking, leaking etc., but there are stories of bolts going bad. If you buy a lowend/midgrade upper, you can upgrade the bolt or BCG to add some reliability to the upper. I posted in another thread that my CMMG upper has a better reliability rate than my Noveske upper so far. Do I trust the gun with the high end logo or the gun that functions better? Noveske barrels are more accurate than midgrade barrels, but even a non-Noveske barrel is accurate enough for "minute of torso" shots.

Have you actually heard anything bad about LaRue uppers? Just curious what failures they have or why like you said they seem to end up in the marketplace? I have noticed people selling them and I always wonder why? On the other hand I also see people selling Colt so who knows!?!?

I used to own one. Nothing wrong just wasnt what I needed. Oh and they were completely over hyped. This is how I learned to stop listening to kool aid drinkers.

Barrels don't often break, but having a properly reamed chamber, well done chrome lining/lapping, proper twist rate, port size, gas system, etc... all makes a difference.
