.30-06 was long accepted as more than sufficient for any game animal in North America, before all the boutique / belted magnum calibers got going. Most of the last century in fact.
I my grandfather took a lot of CA mulies with his Rem 721 .270.

If I was deliberately hunting bear or moose, I might consider a 7mm a better choice.

I don't agree with that. If you wanted to hunt heavier game, the .30-06 with 180gr or better is your baby. But then, I don't worship at the Roy Weatherby Church Of Astonishing Velocity which seems to be the current fad.

What do you need guns for if you are going to send your children, seven hours a day, 180 days a year to government schools? What do you need the guns for at that point?-- R. C. Sproul, Jr. (unconfirmed)

The 30-06 will probably have a better selection in lead free ammo! Plus the 30-06 is a good deer gun. Thats what i have, Rem 700 30-06!

No Offense but I think your 7mag with ballistic tips is overkill
A 30-06 is a perfect all around caliber! Deer dont need ballistic tips unless you

I have a 7 mag, it's a nice small to medium game round just like the 30.06.

The 7 mag will push a 175 grain bullet at about 2850 fps while the 30.06 will throw the 180 grainers at about the same speed in the light magnum version. So there's not a whole lot of difference between them.

The 30,06 is cheaper to feed, so buy it.

The OP said the gun is for deer hunting only, so barrel life is a non-issue. Shooting a few rounds a year is not going wear out a barrel.

I've got my Grandfather's deer hunting rifle from 1936 and it's as accurate as any other hunting rifle I own.

Like I said in that post, I think the 7 mag is overkill. I shoot it because that's what I have. Also, I have killed 3 with my ballistic tips with no bullet explosion, which some say they will do. Here's some numbers for ya.

                        From Federal's website
                        Energy @ 100 yards
                        7mm- 2670 ft lbs (150gr)
                        30-06- 2506 ft lbs (180gr)
                        .270- 2324 ft lbs (130gr)
                        .308- 2270 ft lbs (150gr)
