1 think I would look for right now is which round has more available lead free ammo.

i believe the 7mm mag has a flatter trajectory(higher velocity), if that means anything to you

For deer hunting only, I will go with 30-06. Ammo is cheaper and recoil is less. The barrel life will be longer. More importantly, threr are more bullet selection than 7mm.

Go with 06 there is much more bullet options to choose from. Also you can find 06 ammo almost every where 7mm is very common also just not a common as 06.

                Kev,

what these guys are saying is right on the money. I have both, the 06' has more thump the the 7mm, but the 7mm is flatter and faster shooting. Usually in cali, for deer, you wont realize the potential of a 7mm, unless you are shooting in the desert or equiv.

'06. YOu can get ammo for it anywhere on Earth. You can even get 55 grain sabotted "accelerator" ammo

7mm mag is a bit overkill for deer hunting. If you had plans further down the road to take larger game, then think about the 7mm.

Just goes to show that recoil is relative. The 7 doesn't bother me at all, but an '06 does. And of course the gun fit has an impact - my '06 is an '03 NRA Springfield Sporter, the 7 is a Rem 700. Fifty rounds of '06 and I'm done, the 7 I can shoot all day.

I have both and have used both for deer. The 7 is a Rem 700 and the 06 was a Sako trg-s. While the ammo is cheaper for the 06 I love the flat tragectory of the 7. As a hunter I love not having to worry about hold over...even up to 200 yards.

I think both are overkill for deer hunting in California. They both produce roughly the same amount of energy. I think you would be better suited with a .308, .270 or even a 30-30 for California. I have a 7 mag that was passed on to me by my grandfather, so that's what I use with 147gr ballistic tips.

still so far i am convinced the 30-06 is what most prefer. yes the 7mm has more flater trajectory but like some have told me ( do you want to hit something that you may or may not knock out and have to chase it at 300 plus yards and by the time you get to it since its mountains in cali it will not be 300 yards anymore)) ?? i guess in califonia you dont need a bullet that reaches 5 miles.
