LAPD Motocycle Officer with Full Size AR on Bike

I was driving around my home town yesterday (Santa Clarita) and saw a LAPD motorcycle cop driving past me. I assumed he was driving to work because he was heading south. We both got stopped at a light and he was right in front of me. So I took the opportunity to check out the weapon mounted on the back of his bike, as so many of the moto officers have.

I first thought that it was a full size shotgun because it was a very long gun. But then I realized it was a full size 20" AR. But this one was the full Vietnam A1 clone because it had the integrated A1 carrying handle and even had the triangular hand guards. It was decked out for action too because it had a sling wrapped about the stock and it had a spare mag (I think) attached to the stock.

I have seen many motorcycle officers with M4s and others with shorty shotguns but I've never seen one with a full size 20" rifle. If only I had a chance to talk to him I would have loved to get more info about why he was carrying that.

Now I know this thread is pretty much useless without pics but I wasn't about to be some stranger snapping a picture of an LEO.

    Something like this?

I thought lots of LAPD officers carried ARs in their vehicles after the Northridge bank heist?

      I spotted something special to.
A multistrada police bike. It was during a commercial or movie shoot and the street had to be stopped for a few minutes for the shot.

2024 New Year?s resolution will be no posting..

Brea PD (Orange County) had ARs on their "motor units" starting ten years ago.
Looks like they have updated to something with a folding stock and a red dot across the rear rack:

Yes, that pic of the bike with the long gun is close to what I saw. Although that looks like A2 hand guards whereas the one I saw was clearly the smooth triangular guards. I have seen many officers with short M4s but I've never seen a full size rifle. So maybe LAPD issues 20" rifles to some. Anyway, it was pretty cool.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in NorCal. Must be a SoCal thing

Not just a SoCal thing BP.

I'm from central CA and one of local PD's has them on all their motor units.

The other one is starting to but not all of them are outfitted yet.

I talked to a MotorCop once and was told that having the rifles on the bikes makes sense since they are usually the first to arrive on scene due to their ability to lane split and get through heavy traffic. Made sense to me... I wouldn't want to be first on scene and find out I have a pistol against a rifle...

The old M16 that you saw might be a lend/lease weapon from the US gubmint. They furnish tons of departments with old and newer weapons that are just sitting around collecting dust.

Some departments in the NE and SE part of the country have M14 rifles on loan to them.

                    .
Oh I'm sure it wasn't a Vietnam clone. It probably was the real deal, a DRMO'd M16.

I see them around my town here in the Bay Area. One cop had a daniel defense ar on the back of his bike ( I think it was a DD; only saw the stock).

Where at in Norcal? I have seen several motor cops with M4 stocks sticking up

I see plenty of moto cops with ARs off the back... most of them being SBRs.
