Looks pretty good. Has more power than 30 Carbine. It will shoot heavy bullets better than 7.62x39 and way bigger selection of bullets than the 7.62x39. If you want 7.62x39 to shoot cheap ammo, an SKS is probably the best way to go.

Yes, and there are some pretty good deals out there on 300 BLK ammo as well, including PPU.

Had both a mini-14 and a mini-30, similar performance. I mainly shot steel case out of the mini-30, only issue was I did break the firing pin. Ruger fixed it for free, but at the time they wouldn't sell any spare firing pins, much less any kind of spare part, so it was a two week turn around time. Slightly more accurate than my SKS or AK but nothing to really get excited about.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I guess a new spring and possibly an extended firing pin (Midway USA) would allow it to feed/fire the steel cased ammo.

But I wonder if that would have a negative impact on brass ammo?

Maybe that would be a topic for a separate post.

I have an early eighties Mini-14 and an early nineties Mini-30. I haven't fired either one in a decade or two, but they were both reliable plinkers. All I ever fired in the 30 was cheap crap Russian steel cased ammo. Never had any problems.
