    Ruger Mini 30 -- Compared to a Mini 14

I know many people do not like the Ruger Mini rifles. However, I have been satisfied with my Mini 14's. I have not been able to shoot them much, but have fun when I am able.

Should I decide to get a Mini 30, can I expect it's performance to be similar to the Mini 14? I realize the differences between the calibers, but I am referring to the rifle's performance within the limitations of each caliber.

I have always shot PMC brass ammo out of my Mini 14's -- But I would shoot the steel russian ammo out of the Mini 30.

Any thoughts from those who have a Mini 30 ?

    Thanks

My Mini 30 I bought in 1987 is great, its a 186 series and very accurate, its 30 years later now, don't know what to say about the newer rifles. Use brass
      cases is my recommendation.

        Consider a Mini-14 in 300 BLK?

I really liked my Mini-30, but be prepared for a picky eater.
Mine would not eat cheap steel cased ammo, and I understand that is the norm.

It ended up being cheaper to sell the 30 and buy an AK to be able to use all the ammo I had on hand.

                It's a turd sandwich with cheese. :P

OP don't waste time with 300 AAC. It falls slightly short of its goal of mimicking 7.62x39mm, but is also more expensive with less ammo options. A Mini 14 in 300 AAC was probably one of the most unecessary rifles ever developed.

                  300BLK

Looks pretty good. Has more power than 30 Carbine. It will shoot heavy bullets better than 7.62x39 and way bigger selection of bullets than the 7.62x39. If you want 7.62x39 to shoot cheap ammo, an SKS is probably the best way to go.

totally off topic but my LGS had a mini 6.8 in stock on the consignment rack. Pretty neat, didn't even know they had been made but apparently not for long. I would've had an interest but the stainless rifle had some significant rust all over it and the seller said it was a collector's item since they had been discontinued. he was asking $1100 for it.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

196s and 581 here. Same for me.

I did change out the gas shim for a smaller port and the 196's have accustruts but other than that they have been trusty little guys.

This is a good idea actually. None of the berdan nonsense to deal with

This is one I would stay away from.

IIRC, the 6.8s only are SAAMI or SPCI chambered and that really limits current ammo choice as it is a very tight chamber.

Stick with SPCII or newer chamberings in 6.8Sspc
