Leupold Scout Scope. It's what I used when I still had my M1A Scout. Now it's unused in my gun safe. I should sell the thing. It's an excellent, unlimited eye-relief scope.

Look for a pistol scout to work in your scout application. 2-7 power range would work well.Burris makes a good scope as does leupold.

I had a leupold on mine with and ultimak rail...look for whatever one has the best eye relief and don't bother with the variable ones imho because you'll really just want/use the highest magnification available.

bump up this thread, see if anyone else has any input.

Renard - I like that idea, but this is for a family friend, if it was mine I wouldn't even have to ask, with the shorter barrel I'd go with, some sort of red-dot or RMR style optic.

But he wants something that he thinks can do everything: hunt, home defense, long range plink. Which I am not sure is possible.

            Thanks

              I think Nikon makes a 2x7 scout.

Be careful with the "use a pistol scope" approach. I use alot of pistol scopes on my T/C single shot pistols. Eye relief is generally longer on a pistol scope than an EER or long relief rifle scope. Depending on how you're built, the rifle's configuration and where the scope's being placed - could work out fine, or might not have enough eye relief.

The Weaver 2.5 to 8X works well for me on a Ruger GSR. But, I use extra stock spacers and an about 21" LOP would be great for my 38" shirt sleeve length arms. I have the scope mounted as far forward as possible. Were I short or the scope rail 1" shorter I'd probably have to get something else.

Leatherwood makes a 2 to 7X scout rifle scope. Not sure on quality, pretty sure it's made in China & their line is "hit or miss" on quality.

I have this Burris on my Savage Scout. I like it.

I have the fixed leupold scout scope in Warne QD rings and am happy with the set up.

pistol scope will have too much ER and variables want your eye in a different spot as you change the magnification

I have been using a 2.5x Leupold scout scope and it works great, excellent glass and very bright. It runs about $300 or so new.
I believe they now offer it in a 4x.

I have also used a Leatherwood 2-7x that runs about $150 or so new. It is satisfactory and fairly rugged. I threw that on my mini. The Leupold is far better though.

Burris also offers a scout scope, but I haven't used one. I would think it is comparable to the Leupold scopes

I have owned Bushnell and Nikon lower end offerings, and IMO, I wouldn't buy them again.

Seems to me like a 1-6 scope like the Strike Eagle would be better. You wouldn't have to take it off since it acts like a RDS at 1x. Not ideal for any of those uses, but usable for all.

And I know the gradients are for 5.56, but that's just for convenience. You can just recalc them for your rifle and make a little dope sheet that goes in the back cover (in case you forget). I think they already worked it out for you in .308 anyway.

You know I went to the range once and a nice fella let me shoot his AR that had a trijicon scope (not the ACOG) that had a very nice red triangle that caught my eye quick...maybe check out a few of their options for something with a variable zoom.
Primary Arms is also worth mentioning...sorry I don't know specific models

personally, I would not use a variable powered scope. Not because they aren't "spec" for scouts. actually there is nothing in the concept precluding the use of traditionally mounted scopes or even forward mounted variable. Rather, variable powered simply get in the way of the benefits of a the forward mounted scope.

                            my two cents...

go with the leupold fixed powered scope. Or look into a red dot scope.
