Serial numbering question

Sorry if this is another thing still up in the air but when you put a serial number on an 80% lower as now required (I think) do you then register that serial number with the ATF? This sh*t is just so confusing and I'm trying to stay on the right side of the law here.

its california atf wont care if you make a 80% without a number you need to request it from the doj.

You don't register it with anybody provided

• You're not using it to register a California Assault Weapon after DOJ pushes new regulations requiring them to assign a number to your home build firearm.
• You don't wait until after July 1, 2018 at which point as of January 1, 2019 you must engrave a DOJ assigned serial number.

(b) Commencing July 1, 2018, prior to manufacturing or assembling a firearm, a person manufacturing or assembling the firearm shall do all of the following:

(c) By January 1, 2019, any person who, as of July 1, 2018, owns a firearm that does not bear a serial number assigned to it pursuant to either Section 23910 or pursuant to Chapter 44 (commencing with Section 921) of Part 1 of Title 18 of the United States Code and the regulations issued pursuant thereto, shall do all of the following:

So if done before the date listed you put a serial number on it and don't need to report it to anyone? Seems like it's pointless, but that wouldn't surprise me

Looks like you cannot get any home-made serial registered as an "AW."

If you make something that is not a "AW", you may need to voluntarily register it so it appears in a database by the time the new law hits on 7/1/2018 as above. Thats what some are saying. Other folks think you can just apply a number and do nothing as long as you do it before 7/1/2018. Intelligent minds differ on wtf will be the interpretation by the DOJ. No one can predict them...as we have seen.

Yeah that's what it seems like. I wasn't sure if this had been ironed out yet. I don't want to put a serial number on it and then have to figure out how to change it later. I'm planning to put a maglock on this one to avoid aw anyway.

On a side note.. my 80% lower, I had my own personal serial number engraved underneath the permanent trigger guard just for myself so that I can prove it's my weapon. I don't intend to register and I don't intend to add any more engraving to this weapon.
