Ouch. Ya those were tough times. I made out like a bandit those days because I was into AKs which were still cheap then. It was after the market readjusted, post Sandy Hook that AK prices just got stupid high. Which was nice cuz I was just getting bored and ended up selling about a dozen of the AKs I had bought for pennies

$500 is the free state price. CA models are going to cost a bit more

You could have easily picked up one for $500 within the last year.
Was on the fence for most of the year on getting a firearm the whole year. Finally pulled the trigger (pun intended) with a handgun (p226, which also blew my firearm budget with the Mrs for the year. Tho she likes to shoot it as much as I like do).

Yeah i get the CA Tax on guns would maybe be 600/700 but when I saw the Ruger listed near 1k at Peninsula Guns and Tactical it annoyed me at first. I am likely going to get an 10/22 first anyways and maybe lower to build up over the year. Or sneak an full AR and not tell the Mrs

Oh well you didn't mention it was a Ruger AR. In that case the high price isn't due to a CA surcharge, there's actually a good reason for it. It's the Ruger surcharge. It's the price you pay for a product that's 5 years too late to market & has no innovative features. Yeah it seems excessive, but once you look at Ruger's other products you'll see it fits right in.
