When I was looking for a $350ish upper I ended up with some of that new math
2x$350 got me a Stag 2HT and no issues.

$1000! Can be accomplished for way less, at least I did anyway.

            24" WOA bull barrel $295
            Mega forged upper $109
            DPMS free float tube $55
            Odin Works BCG $129

Shoots sub MOA all day. I see absolutely no reason to spend $200+ on a hand guard.

How's this? Will I be able to shoot 5.56 military ammo in this?

I've been considering that. Get a M&P15 or something like that (complete rifle) for around $700 ish. I do have a Spikes Tactical complete rifle.

I was hoping to get a get a decent upper (while I still can) - I might increase my budget.

                  How is this - http://www.hardenedarms.com/ecProduct_286_27

                  Any others.... ?

                  Thanks!
Don't buy an upper with a quad rail. Just useless weight. Get a Keymod or MLok. Don't buy an upper with a front sight tower, It's useless and just gets in the way of optics. After you do some shopping you may consider spending a bit more.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

CDNN won't sell that to you in CA...

Are you sure you are not trolling? It says right in the description in bold:
.223 Wylde chambering allows for accurate and reliable shooting of .223 REM or 5.56NATO ammunition.

You can swap the with something nicer next year. You can always sell your cheap upper after the new year.
I was actually looking to buy myself a Christmas gift (a decent upper). I might have to raise my budget for a good upper. But I wasn't looking for an upper to complete my lower. I have a complete Spikes Tactical ST-15 mid length model. And I would make mine featureless to avoid all hassles.

For $700ish I can buy a complete M&P15. So should I just get that, or use that money to buy/build a precision upper and use the lower from my Spikes Tactical? I could use the BCG & CH from the ST also.

The way my quest began -
I was going to buy a .223 bolt action Sniper type rifle. Some guys suggested to build an AR, which would cost less. So here I am thinking of buying a upper / or a complete rifle (while I can).

Just go splurge on a Noveske, it is just a tad more than what you are looking at.

This is a weird question - but how many ARs should one have? I know... more the better. But honestly, I feel 1 is necessary, 2 would be good to have, 3 is luxury. So, will just 1 do? Pros/Cons of owning "just 1 ?"

I think if you want a 16" carbine style OR a 18" precision style - first, the difference won't be much until 300-400 yrds; and secondly, one could just add a SPR upper... YOUR Thoughts?????

High quality barrels will run you $350 for just the barrel shipped. http://direct.kriegerbarrels.com/col..._c_7_d_7-twist

A nice free-floating handguard is about $200 to start, and goes way up from there. Here is a nice entry level one: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-K...10-556-blk.htm
                            • Compass Lake Engineering and WOA both make uppers for less than $1k which will outshoot most people.
                            • CLE, WOA, and others all make great barrels for less than $350.
                            • CLE, WOA, and RRA all make steel float tubes that hide under normal handguards for less than $200

Assuming the laws around AWs don't change (and you want to register your ARs) then you should have at least two because getting work done on an AW is more complicated than a normal firearm. I think three lowers is ideal, if you can do your own work or aren't registering any of them then one or two is fine.
