Maybe you will get lucky. Doesnt hurt to look. If you find a USGI for anywhere close to $1000, jump on it.

Well yes they were the most produced but its not like they are any less worthy of owning. I like them because they were probably the most common carbine found on the frontline and they were made by GM. So they have a lot of history.

Should I be wary if someone is selling a USGI carbine on somewhere like gunbroker for significantly less than 900-1000?

Not necessarily but you have to get some detailed pics to make sure there isnt anything wrong with it. Of course in person inspection is ideal. Just like with any gun you would buy.

M1 carbines are awesome little rifles!

My unscientific evaluation of the cartridge left a little to be desired ~
Took the M1 & the 357 to the range along with a bowling ball. Multiple 30 Cal rounds just bounced off, while it only two rounds of 357 to bust it up Completely. Again, unscientific - and just maybe the 30 carbine "loosened it up" but the results were quite clear to me........

There is a nice IBM Carbine for sale over on the FAL files.

Also may want to keep your eye on the M1 Carbine page of the CMP Marketplace. There is a nice Rockola for sale right now - $2K

Best of luck no matter what direction you go!

My impression was that 30 Carbine has significantly more power than 357 when the 357 is out of a handgun, and similar power when both are fired out of carbines. 357 can throw much heavier bullets though, which are probably important for breaking concrete.

No need to worry about 10 round magazines, bullet buttons, or none of that. Plus, an SKS will be much more reliable than an M1 Carbine (as much as I love them) and ammo will be inexpensive.
                      excellent advise right here

Why not a Ruger Mini-14? Half the price of an M1A and very similar.

Yes. They are not snap-together like AR's. Years ago parts sets and receivers were a dime a dozen and a lot of it got bought up. I know a guy that has boxes and boxes of receivers, and short of barrels and stocks, probably has enough parts to build a hundred carbines. There are people putting them together that don't necessarily know what they're doing. Unless you have a lot of faith in it's history you should get an expert to look it over, either before or after you buy it.

Funny you say that, I sold my M1 to finance a Mini. Got sick of paying for 30 carbine ammo

I sold my Mini to finance my M1. .223 brass is around $.30/round; 30 caliber is around $.32/round. Kind of a wash in my opinion.

Also, I absolutely hated the way the magazine inserted into the Mini - angle in the front, rock back, and hope you got it right. If not, rinse and repeat.
