My brother and I are looking to buy our dad his first battle rifle for Christmas. M1A's are a little too pricey, and the CMP is fresh out of Garands. He's old school and doesn't want an AR because of the bullet button requirement. Is there currently a good source for M1 carbines? Authentic or replica is fine. Furthermore, do they make 10 round mags for them to use in CA? Or can they be sold to you with old authentic 20 rounders?

M1 Carbines?

Most Garands and some M1 Carbines can be as expensive as an M1A.
Check Gunbroker for going prices. There might even be some for sale in our market place.
In Ca, you are stuck with 10 round magazines. They are available. -
The +10 round magazines are a no go. You'll definitely find WWII M1 Carbines on GunBroker, Cabelas "Gun Library" and the upcoming Reno Gun Show but the price of a nice looking one, even the plentiful Inland version, won't be too far below an M1A.
Any commercial version I've shot had issues. And the reviews most always have a line that goes something like "They really got the look and feel right and accuracy was just what you'd expect. I'm told the few functioning problems I experienced will be corrected in later production runs ...."
I stumbled across a non-import early Inland that wasn't rearsenaled and am very happy.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

Plenty of carbines around, but be prepared to spend upwards of $1,000 for a decent one.
Don't bother with a non-USGI one, the price is too high and the quality too low....stick with the real-deal.
Put out a WTB ad here on the forums and cruise Gunbroker.Comment

The CMP is not out of ALL garands ... just some of the grades.
If going carbine you want USGI ...... IF you insist on buying a commercial carbine ..... I'd run 3 or 4 mags through it first ........ and not spend more than $350 for it.If you start thinking like a Free Man
You'll begin to feel like a Free Man
And pretty soon you'll begin acting like a Free ManComment

Yeah but.....you are very limited on where you can transport it and when, and you can't just take it to any old gunsmith, you also can't sell it or pass it down to the next generation. Just FYI.Comment

The Auto-Ordnance carbines are kinda nice. They have improved reliability and build quality greatly in the last few years
