    My boys first rifle is...

...an evil black rifle. My 9yo has been shooting the MKII .22lr for a few years now. He's gotten to the point where he can keep it on target at 100 yards. He wants to start shooting a bit further, and have some more pop. So I decided to build him an AR. Mostly because its the one platform that can be adjusted as he grows, and .223 is a great centerfire starter round. He's going to shoot it from the bench and prone mostly so weight wasn't a concern.

I also built this thing pretty damn cheap since I had some parts and found some deals.
    -Tactical Machining 80% Lower $30.00
    -80% Jig $25.00
    -Anderson LPK $50.00
-Buffer and Stock I had already
-Crossfire II scope and Aero Mount I passed down from my AR
    -Ebay Handguard $40
-Anderson SBR 18" Stainless Barrel/low profile gas block and tube/muzzle brake $120 used from another CalGunner
    -Upper Reciever/Anderson BCG/Strike Ind charging handle $205

I just rattle canned the paint job. I figured its going to get beat up so keep it simple and I can always redo it. Range report in the next week or so.

Lucky kid and you're a good dad! I remember my first rifle and handgun, mainly since I still got them both in my safe Got the rifle from my Uncle and the revolver from my Grandpa.

Started with an Ithaca M49 22LR and a Navy Arms 1875 Remington replica .45 Colt. I thought I was the luckiest kid in the world. Your boy is going to feel the same way I bet, along with growing up shooting it, he can add, remove, tweak basically anything on that gun as time goes on. Make him really enjoy it and he makes it truly his own.

      Good job!

I was going to build this rifle anyways. He's been shooting with me a lot and he really enjoys it. So I figured, I'll build the rifle so he can use it and when he's 18 its his.

Nice!...I am going old school on firearms training with my kid. I am staying out of the training. I have bought an HK MP5 and Colt AR in 22lr. Now that he is 11, he is going through boy scouts and he shot a bolt action 22. He gets to go to a 3 day shooting camp. I figure once he is done, I will go shooting with him with semi autos. We currently are into compound bows and do shoot bb guns occasionally.

Side note, his favorite black ops gun is the SCAR 17 H. He will have to wait at least until 16 or probably 18 before shooting his dad's 308 SCAR. More than likely will have to shoot it in Reno because of the stupid CA AW laws. Ya, I am being super cautious in this stupid state. Cannot wait to buy a house in Colorado...super annoyed about the anti black gun or semi hate by the legislation. Yes, I follow the rules, yet plan on giving my state taxes to another state. Just need to convince the family Colorado is better than California.

Why can't he shoot the SCAR? Aren't they relatively soft shooting? Set that boy up with some bags and let him go to town!

I just bought 5 BCM uppers and PSA lowers for my kids. They're still too young to shoot (still in diapers) but I figured I may as well get them now as I can't be sure what tomorrow will look like.

Oh, he will have plenty of time to shoot it...think will start on 22's....then a real AR...then a SCAR and an M1A...no rush...guns will still be in the safe...Son has interest, yet we still are into the bow and arrow compound bows...I would rather have him have more upper body strength. I am sure an AR in 5.56 will be no problem, yet want him to have motivation. Such as earn your Merit badge in rifles and I will let you shoot a real AR-15.

Think shotguns are the real fun...I totally suck at those and would like to learn duck hunting with my son. Saw an 11 year old shoot a 20 gauge on the skeet shoot. He only did one shot...that recoil was enough...the 14 year olds looked like pros. I looked like a sad hack when I tried it on the parent shoot.
