    Newbie AK 47 question

So newbie here (well to AKs and ARs). I am trying to understand what AKs are CA compliant. Ive noticed the ones of that come up on CG for sale seemed to be priced high due to the demand and get snatched up quickly. So my question is why cant I simply purchase an AK from out of state (free state where the demand and prices aren't so high) and have them install a bullet button and ship to my FFL here?

I looked on the CA rifle on roster list on the DOJ website and I didn't see many of the major brands (Saiga, Century etc) to be listed as off roster and thus not allowed to be shipped into CA

I'd really like to buy an AK but I feel like I'm missing something here. Any help or info would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Rifle roster? I don't know of any rifle roster. There is a list of ca banned rifles that include Chinese made aks and I believe SLRs.
When you ship a rifle from a free state into California your FFL will charge tax even if the rifle is used and from a private party. Kinda kills the savings of any.
Wasrs throughout the U.S. are demanding a premium right now so even in free states there going for 700+

As long as the ak isn't banned by name in California all you need is a maglock to make it ca legal. Atlantic will ship to ca and there are people willing to receive the rifle for you and make it ca compliant before shipping it to you in ca. Good luck op, the ak market is demanding a premium compared to the ar market right now.

No such thing as a rifle roster. Maybe you where looking at the banned by name list?

Lots of people have rifles shipped in from other states after they have been made compliant... Issue is finding a shop that will do it.

Cheap ak's out of state, where? Keep in mind shipping+transfer+ tax+ making it ca compliant adds at least $100 to buying it out of state

Some of the Arsenal AK-74's are banned by name like the SLR's and such....

As long as the AK doesn't have a pistol grip or flash suppressor or folding stock after January, you're good to go.

Go to Atlantic Firearms and Prepper Gun Shop and look at "CA compliant" and play it safe, mate.

              ...
What you propose is perfectly possible, assuming you've already checked that the particular AK is not banned by name on the list that you referenced. The problem is that a good fraction of gun shops want nothing to do with CA & won't sell to us regardless, another fraction are willing to sell to us but don't know all the crazy rules and are reluctant to take an online stranger's assurances that it's legal, and that leaves only a small fraction of shops that are willing and know how to sell to us.

CA is a big market so it's likely other buyers have already cleared out their inventory. But there are viable sellers out there.

Also factor in shipping and transfer costs. And you'll have to pay tax regardless so there's no savings there.

oh, and a list. Or go on gunbroker & look for a CA-friendly shop.

this is the easy way of buying California legal AK. go here:

Atlantic is a reputable dealer (and a Calguns vendor, they post here). this is their California list, ones they will charge you to install a bullet button on and remove 30 rounds mag. ship it to your FFL.

btw: don't buy RAS or IO AK. crap.
buy DDI, N-Pap, VEPR, Arsend SAM series......

Their a 7.62x39 SLR Folding stock pin with no muzzel break in Fresno, it's the BLACK Synthetic Stocks. Asking price was $1,300 mil receiver it's the Bulgarian receiver by Arsenal. I owed the sgl model but I feel that I don't need another one so I didn't get it. Plus I'm not a fan of folding stock type of guy.

If you get an Aresenal its better to get one with a aftermarket maglock than the ca version with the factory mag lock.
