Weld-on charging handle extension for an AK?

I've tried several set screw type extensions (including Krebs and Zenit) on several different AKs but no matter how much Loctite I use they all eventually work their way off, usually in a dramatic fashion.

I haven't had much luck finding a weld-on type (except that old vertical Galil-style from Krebs, but I'm not into it). Should I get one that's steel and just tack it on? Anyone done this? Any other ideas?

The trick with those setscrew attached handles is to pack the handle cavity mostly full of a good two part epoxy or JB weld and then press it on the carrier and tighten the setscrew.
The extra epoxy will squeeze out and you just wipe it off.
The epoxy will fill in all the voids around the old charging handle so that the new handle can not move and work it's way free.

You should just old school it like the kids in hills around Kabul.

I welded on this charging handle on my PAR-1 when I converted it to semi auto....

The original carrier had no handle. I cut the handle off a destroyed carrier as a donor. Looks just like it came from the factory with it.

If you want a permanent fix welding on a extension will solve your issue.

What is wrong with the standard AK charging handle..? It's been working just fine since the 40's.

I don't live in the 40s and the AK manual of arms has changed since.

Anyway, I always thought the case-on-charging-handle was mostly for funsies, but holy **** if you crimp it that thing is NOT coming off.

Yet modern AK's/100-series still use the same charging handle.

And yet that has nothing to do with an updated manual of arms.

If it ain't broke why fix it? Russians don't seem to think its an issue. Same can be said about the 1911 but over 100 years going and folk still buy the GI model. Just food for thought, we all own our own rifles and we can modify them to how we see fit (legally of course).

The manual of arms is the methods used operate the weapon. It may change independently of the weapon's design. Generally people use under or over-hand charging methods rather than removing their hand from the pistol grip. This method benefits greatly from an extended charging handle for obvious reasons. I never see a problem with extended controls. I say whatever helps you increase your chances of making positive contact with the weapon, do it. I have entended controls on all my rifles and pistols. Why not?
