Top loading AR with clips??

Need some help with my latest brainstorm.

Been reading about the proposed CA bills working through the Legislature, some of which would completely outlaw all semi-auto, centerfire rifles without fixed magazines. Like no fooling really fixed like a Garand.

So how about some new reworking of an AR15 with a clip fed, top loading fixed magazine. Figure out some sort of Garand looking system, clips that hold 8 or 10 5.56 NATO rounds.

And of course the clip has to ring like a bell when it gets kicked out empty.

I'm pretty vague here, no working model, no solid details.

I realize that this might be extremely lame compared to an actual AR with a 30 round magazine, but what about some new design to keep us out of jail if (God Forbid!) these new bills pass the Leg and get signed into Law?

Way before my time of coming of age and buying firearms the old geezers had bushmaster top loading ar-15s and fab 10 lowers in which the only way to load the ar-15 was from the top. I'm sure a couple cal gunners still have them

Read the text of AB 1663 and AB 1664. The term "detachable magazine" in both bills is defined to include things like the clips used in a Garand.

There was an adapter to load the FAB10 from the top from striper clips. I think I still have mine.

I hate to be a dream killer, but they already have a pump action AR already on the market that will be able to use detachable mags. Why redesign the Garand?

Probably cheaper and less effort than a pump action ar or top loading from a clip

What you are suggesting has already been created. Prior to the bullet button concept, one or more companies developed AR style rifles for sale in California that had a solid magazine base and could only be loaded from the top. Similar to the broom handle mauser.

For what it's worth, the AR manufacturer that I work for sells a magazine that is installed by removing the bolt stop, installing the magazine into the well from the top, then reinstalling the bolt stop. The magazine can't be removed without disassembling the bolt stop. As far as I can see, this would comply if those asinine bills make it into law.

Now someone just has to come up with an AR upper that has a loading port and a stripper guide. That's probably about as close as anyone's going to come to what the OP wants.

I do have to admit that the idea of a modern rifle that self-ejects its clip with that Garand "ring" is very fun though.
