You mentioned competition and long range. In the USA, people start with highpower competition that is shot at 200, 300 and 600 yards (and reduced distances). That is where you want to start. Go to a match and check it out. After a couple of years you'll have a completely different idea on where you want to go but by then you'll know how to shoot a rifle. And by the way you can shoot that course of fire with an AR10 308.

The biggest down fall of the .308 is at extended range the wind really starts to push it around. The 7MM08, 6.5 and .260 are more aerodynamic and cut through the wind easily

          Great advice.

Start your education here. For reliable 1000 yard work I'd go 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag. I think the 6.5 is the new hot ticket but I don't think it's as cheap. Reloading will make any of them more affordable and tailor made to your gun.

Thanks for the link. Registered there and will do some lurking and reading for the next few weeks.

Regarding the 7mm and 300WM options, would/could you use them in an AR platform? Or bolt only?

For a dedicated 1000 yard AR, 6.5 Creedmoor is probably your best bet. 308 will definitely get it done, but it's a lot more challenging to shoot at that distance. Ballistic Advantage just stared cranking out barrels in 6.5 that aren't overly expensive. Their .223 barrels have a pretty good reputation for accuracy, I'd be surprised if these were any different:

I haven't read the advice given but I wanted to ask; would you consider a bolt-action?

I've played with and own many AR's both in and out of the military; many were OK at ranges 400+yards (especially man-sized) but when I first took it out to Sac Valley for precision shooting at longer ranges I was sorely disappointed.

Switched over to a BA and I've shot better at my semi-local 200 yard range than I ever have before. Can't wait until I start shooting passed that.

The only issue is, bolt actions and precision shooting are a whole new sickness!

Did you just recommend a 300 WM for a new shooter? Kinda like teaching pistol shooting with a full house 454 isn't it?

I seem to recall the OP asking alot of .308 questions.

3 of the exact same threads asking the exact same question...

More of the OP's .308 threads.....

OP...you ever gonna build something with all these threads ???
Or ya just increasing your post count ??
