16" .308 Barrel with Rifle Length Gas?

Does anyone make a light- or medium-weight 16" .308 Barrel with rifle-length gas?

I have a DPMS Hunter Lite barrel with a rifle length gas system. It's 20" though. Not sure if they make a 16" version. I'm sure they make one - do a quick google search maybe?

CMMG is the only one I can think of right now.

Fulton Armory used to have a light weight barrel, but they don't seem to have them listed on their website anymore.
Sometimes I wonder why I even bother. Some people are just incapable of understanding the simplest of things.

Personally, I find 16" 308 rifles very unpleasant to shoot---can you say muzzle blast! I'd try one before you buy one---or even stand next to one being shot...

Yes, pretty loud. My club is not too fond of mine on range day...LOL

I just bought a 24" Criterion Bull Barrel to replace it. Will not use a brake.

Dwell time will be very short on that setup, but recoil impulse will also be much softer than a carbine or mid gassed setup. I run the CMMG 16" rifle gassed 308 barrel, and it's very soft shooting as far as 308's go. It's definitely not a lightweight profile though, my rifle weighs in at around 10 pounds without optics. I ended up replacing the tungsten weights in my carbine buffer with steel weights to get reliable cycling with it. Buffer weight is a tad over 2 ounces now.

If your looking for an AR 308 platform that is softer shooting look at a 7mm-08, .260, or a 6.5 Creedmoor. All will out preform a 308 past 900 yards and Beyond.

What will a 16" RL gassed barrel do that a 16" carbine gassed (with an adjustable gas block) won't?

                  I have shot a full length AR10 (Armalite) and a 16" LR308 w/AGB.
LR was easy cycling and recoil was softer to my subjective feel.
It seems to me the AGB is the real difference and with less tuning hassles.

I built mine with the intention of running it suppressed now that I'm out of CA. The shorter dwell time will result in less crap being blown back into the receiver area due to the action unlocking later. I'm still working on getting a can, I have a feeling that I may be adding tungsten weights back into the buffer due to the extra backpressure.

                      ^^
Re-tuning the rifle with or sans can would still be easier with AGB du jour.
Gas and crap will still load up in your receiver and blow any lube you have in there back down into the RE.
Even gas piston rifles get dirty back inside the receivers.
Running a can is always messy. [emoji1]
I do see what you're trying to achieve tho.

Sent using a long string & 2 cans.

AGB would definitely be easier for tuning purposes, but would not fix the dwell time issue, only the volume of gas being sent to operate the BCG. Most fouling from suppressors comes into the action via the chamber rather than through the gas tube. The suppressor is typically venting expanded gas out of both ends until well after the projectile has exited the last baffle, so keeping the bolt locked up for as long as possible is the best method for minimizing the amount of fouling coming back through the chamber. The trick will be to find the proper balance between suppressed and non-suppressed functioning. It will likely end up being under-gassed without the can and a bit over-gassed with it.

Here's the rifle so far. It uses a Spikes Tactical dynacomp externally threaded for the Ops Inc style cans, along with the Spikes low profile gas block that has a 20 degree shoulder on the front side to mimic the alignment collar setup found on themilitary MK12 rifles. For now it's wearing a simple open ended brake shield over the Spikes dynacomp:

That's a good looking rifle FM. Short and handy I'll bet.
I guess if you're gonna run a suppressor on it that should resolve your dwell/timing problem if there is one. Brake shield helping in that regard?

                          Beware!
The guys I shoot with (out of state) all started with 1 suppressor and all but one now have 2 or more. it seems they tend to breed while you're not watching.
They also seem to breed hand loading equipment and chronographs too.
