Way over thinking this. If I recall OP is in N cal, where there are no restrictions on magnetic ammo. In which case, any cheap or expensive ammo you prefer.

They get terrible/mixed reviews on Google and Reddit. Late, late shipping on "in stock" items.

As others have said the cheapest stuff you can find without that much effort currently is the yugo surplus (I'm down to 300 rounds of it) and the red army standard stuff both brass and copper jacketed variants. All are good stuff. There is also the Hornady stuff for 60 cents a round that Is nice too.

I'm in S Cal, no magnetic ammo allowed.

for the whole cartridge or just the projectile? there is lots of cheap steel case ammo that has non magnetic bullets. i have heard of ranges testing the whole cartridge though and rejecting the cheap steel case russian stuff because it technically attracts a magnet. and they probably dont want to sort when they gather and recycle brass for money

Any link would be appreciated. Unless we have a different definition of "cheap".
To my knowledge, Wolf Yellow box is the only commblock new production non-magnetic steel cased ammo that is reasonably priced, but even that comes to over .30 per round.

Doesn't matter with some ranges. The RO will take a magnet to the ammo, and if anything is magnetic then it's a no-go for the range, regardless if the projectile is non-magnetic or not.

Most commonly, in SoCal, it's to prevent fires caused by a bi-metal bullets bouncing off steel targets. Yeah, it happens.
