Peep sights work best when aperture is close to the eye, being in the middle of the rifle like AK it does not work good for precision shooting, I've tried them out both on AK and Mauser M48 and even handgun (Sig 220).

The best way to improve AK accuracy using leaf open sights is to use smaller or slimmer front post.

I have it on one of my AK's with Tech sights and cowitness using Aimpoint T1.

I have an SKS with Tech Sights in jail, I'll have to try it and then decide if I want to do it to AKs.

It's a peep sight (like on most western military semi-auto rifles), ether you prefer (like) one over leaf sight or don't.
Each have a pro and con but mostly due to user preference.

See post # 8 by full clip, the width on the rear of the leaf is larger vs that of a stock factory one. I have done this mod to damn near every AK I have ever built. you would be surprised at the results to your sight picture.
A small round or rectangular file will do the trick and only takes minuets.
I have also done it with a dremel, but you need to be skilled.
