Before attention to this thread dies out completely....

Got a question about locking and loading a round in an M1 carbine.... I'm not too familiar with my carbine and I just assumed you rack a round in like an AR ie just pull the charging handle back and let the round fly into the chamber. However, it seems that when I do that the round fails to chamber. I seem to have to pull back on the charging handle and push the round in somewhat forcibly. Is that normal with M1 Carbines, or do I got a part thats gone bad?

I figure while I'm out part shopping for handguards I might be able to remedy this buy also buying whatever needs to be fixed.

I had this problem last night with my AO carbine. It was the very first time I had taken it to the range. Problem was the 10rnd magazines I was using were crapola. Might want to try a different mag.

Your chambering problems are probably magazine related, the underside of the round bites into the outer edge of the chamber before it gets into battery with certain ammo/magazine combinations. USGI 15 rnd. magazines eliminate these problems, the only recently manufactured 10 rnd. magazines that seems to work are the Triple K one's available from Cabelas. The Promags are bad news.
