    M1 Carbine with pistol grip

My dad got me an M1 Carbine for my birthday back in 1999 (I was 16) but it has a black synthetic stock with pistol grip, and I never registered it as an assault rifle. With all this stuff caused by the OLL situation it got me thinking... do I need to pin the mag to stay legal with the pistol grip, or do I have to run no pistol grip and have detatchable mags?

Anything with a pistol grip and a detachable mag is an AW. You will either need to fix the mag some way, or get rid of the pistol grip.

If I where you, I would just get a replacement GI stock and put the gun back to normal.

This is just basic AW law. Semiauto centerfire rifle that has a detachable mag? Then NO evil features unless it's reg'd as an AW.

Also, it's generally not a good idea to admit illegal activities in public.

So the only way to stay legal would be to pull it off of the stock until I get a standard one?

Whats the legality of me SELLING the pistol-gripped stock? Would it be considered an "assault weapon" part, or what?

(PS: should this thread be moved to the legal board?)

Yes, remove stock w/ pistol grip. You could sell it but why not keep for the trips across state line..............

To be honest I sort of hate how it looks.... Its got an after market handguard with heat vents too, I wanted to put wood furniture on it anyways, make it look more like an "authentic" carbine. Its an Iver Johnson so its alot newer then an Inland or Winchester or a "real" M1 Carbine.

Yep. Separate them, don't transport them next to each other. Frankly if I were driving out of state with it I'd have them locked separately from each other (even though constructive possession concepts don't apply to by-feature AWs, it's still a good idea to not be DA-bait).

Such parts are fine to have or sell. Again, keep it somewhat separate from the gun.

M1s work fine with regular stocks so no need to go fixed mag, it'd be an abortion.

                      I can't understand why it wasn't registered in 2000.

                        Some people just didn't know...

I was 20 in 2000 and I coulda been put on all my mom's AW registrations along with her, and I didn't know that and neither did she, so now they're all in her name only

It happens, I wasn't very gun savvy or 'net savvy back then....

At least she still lets me shoot the 84S and the AR-15

I was 16 in 2000, and I hate to admit it but my father and I were clueless to what the ban really outlined besides the fact that all of our favorite guns (ARs, AKs, all the fun stuff) were going to be made illegal. The guy at the store told us transfering the Carbine between father and son was perfectly kosher and we didn't really address the whole pistol grip issue.

I really didn't think twice about it (I was active duty army in 2001 and the gun was at my parents until I ETS'd in 2004) until I started playing Call of Duty 2.... then it piqued my interest in WWII firearms again and I checked out my M1 Carbine and realized it would be considered an AW with the stock it had on it. Luckily for me I've got the original wood stock somewhere in my garage, so when I find it I can put the reciever and barrel and all these parts for it in it instead of it laying in pieces on my futon :P

PS, anybody know where I can get a wooden handguard for it? And what kind of sights did USGI carbines have, because I want it to look as "authentic" as possible.

I guess it depends on how authentic you want to be. There were three different sights on the M1 Carbine, one flip style and two adjustable ones.

Fulton Armory has most of what you'll ever need. You could also go to Auto Ordnance, they make the new reproduction M1s, and their stuff should fit USGI carbines (I think). But I would check Fulton first.

Try Numrich, they have everything you need. No doubt Fulton does too, but I wont buy from Clint since he won't ship his lowers to California.
