I agree with the OP as well.

I see no large issues with .357 magnum magazine. Coonan mags work well in their auto loading pistols.

Heck, 10MM would also be an awesome carbine.

Put me down for 2 of these.

Russian PSL in 7.62x54R does IIRC.

I had a Coonan pistol, the mag worked fine. At the time Coonan wasn't making their pistol and magazines generally cost about $225.00 each. Now that they're putting out product I see their mag prices have dropped to anywhere from $60.00 to $150.00. I don't know if that reflects scarcity, lack of volume or Coonan wanting big $$$ - or if there's something special about making a mag for a rimmed cartridge. I don't think folks are going to want to pony up that much $$$ for a pistol magazine.

Re other rimmed cartridge magazines - I have a Smith 52 and a Gibbs Enfield in 45/70. The mags work fine.

Were Ruger to make a "357 Deerfield" my bet is it would use a rotary. IIRC some fellow modified the rotary, mated it to a Desert Eagle mag and came up with a 10 shot mag for the Deerfield.

I believe the Mini 14 in 357 mag is called the M1 Carbine

I agree with the OP. The Mini 14 is an ideal camp rifle. When you are humping, the extremely light weight will be a big +. The stainless / polymer version would do well in the elements as well.

All of the suggestions in this thread are good, but a semi auto with detach mag is a big deal, to me at least.

I would have concerns about .223 effectiveness.against a large attacking animal, but at least you could lay down a decent volume of fire, and likely gets hits on even a fast moving aggresive animal.

I would like to see a light handy carbine in 10mm. It would be easily capable of taking deer while providing better terminal performance on hogs than the .357.

10mm AR would seem to fill that niche.

I kinda wish that I had picked up a Mac in 460 Rowland when they were still being made...

                          230gr at 1300fps+ isn't too shabby!

Enfield rifles have detachable staggered feed magazines that hold rimmed cartridges.
