Thoughts on the Smith & Wesson M&P 15

So is the Smith and Wesson M&P 15 a good rifle? Where does it rate compared to other brands? Any opinions on this?

I put a Rock River Arms 2 stage match trigger in an MP just today- like 2 hours ago for a customer, and the trigger would not work right. I micrometer-ized the pin holes and found they were .013" too far apart.

    That's terrific isn't it?

It was posted on another site, I think Arfcom, awhile ago that the specs were off.

I picked up the MP15-T 811001 from Chris at LanWorld when he first started carrying them (for a great price). I haven't tinkered with it more than to add an ARFX (its really only been fired by the gunsmith) but it seems like a good solid build.

Welcome to LAN World, your home for Manufacturing Importing Industrial Art. Please contact us to get started!

          Pre-ARFX image....sorry.

I only have the lower and will match it with an upper in the future, the finish is actually really nice. I was told it was a rebadged Stag, that's why in the early days it was sent to Stag for any work, but I'm not sure.

When first introduced they were just re-badged Stags, but S&W was supposed to gradually move production in-house.

Crap. I've got a RRA 2-stage trigger on its way and I had intended to use it in my M&P15 lower.

Usually w/ RRA triggers the problem lies w/ the safety selector fitment....

We sell tons of S&Ws haven't seen any issues w/ a single rifle......

S&Ws are just a fancy rifle, Id thought wow those are nice but for less money you can get a stag or other brand.

Thanks. That's good to know and I'll keep my fingers crossed. I have had no issues with the S&W and hope to keep it that way.

I have one. The receiver was out of spec and would not allow magazines to drop free (the machining of the magwell is off center and the magazines wedge against the upper receiver when inserted). When I called up Smith and they found out I lived in the PRK, they freaked! Luckily I have a TX residence so they can ship it to me in TX when the warranty work is done as they refused to ship it back to the PRK despite my trying to educate them on OLL laws. With that in mind, I would consider a smaller less "political" company that supports the OLL movement such as Stag instead of Smith.

That said, the rifle itself is very nice. It has the best factory trigger I have seen on an AR pattern rifle, the troy sights are nice, and it shoots very well. Despite the magwell problems and its tightness, I have not had a malfunction with it.

They are good rifles (unless you get a wonky one), but don't expect Smith to support you if you need warranty work. Now I get to see what kind of warranty work they do, whether they replace the receiver or they just grind some material off the upper receiver.

Good rifles. Better can be purchased for more money. Bullseye carries them.

                            They're getting better with time.

I've seen pics of parts that pretty conclusively says they're getting some batches of Colt parts (like actual M4 marked uppers).

Overall they're nice, but their price is a bit high - so for the money you can do better with others. That doesn't mean they're a bad decision.

no problems with RRA 2-stage here

Wes dropped a RRA 2 stage trigger in my M&P-15T with no issues that I am aware of.

                              MP15-T + MIAD + CTR stock + LaRue UFG = sweet setup
Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
