    Need help with AR Upper

    Hello!
I am making a CA legal pinned mag AR. I have a RRA stripped lower, RRA 6-point telescoping stock, RRA LPK, Bushmaster 10 rounder, and the Prince 50 mag lock kit.

I am looking for a good upper (want it chrome lined). I kinda wanted stay on RRA theme.... however, I have heard that RRA uppers are a real tight fit with the RRA lowers. This would be a pain in the nonono, as I will need to crack it open after every 10 shots..... I could push for 11 if one is in the chamber =P j/k

Do you guys have any suggestions for an upper that would fit well on an RRA lower, without problems?

    Thanks!

I have discovered you really never know until you try it. The thing about a tight fighting upper and lower is with time, it loosens up. I would say just get the upper you like best and you can make it work from there.
www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.

I suggest staying away from any RRA upper that is listed as an AW. With RRA components (lower/parts) and a RRA upper, you may inadvertantly build an AW as listed under RRA. There are uppers that will not make it listed such as the Varment that should be okay.

(2nd one down) I am looking at that one, I like the Rate of Twist..... but it is a "preban".... would that make it "listed" then....

I have all RRA parts. How can an upper make it an AW with an RRA OLL on a fixed mag?

how does it fit? Is it really tight?
            Fairly easy to reload.

Unless you have a registered one..... but still... is it a tight fit?

The lower is the gun. Simple as that.

Stick to RRA or Bushmaster or Armalite or Stag or try one of the quality boutique vendors on the Equipment Exchange on AR15.COM (Denny's Guns/Global Tactical, CMMG, Ameetec, MSTN, BravoCompanyUSA).

More specifically, ask if their barrels are chrome lined AND use 4150 steel and are "MPI" inspected (some brands check all barrels, others check random ones). If it's a flattop, the front sight/gas block should have an "F"-marking (though Bushy doesn't). Some folks are picky and use Colt bolts in their builds since they're 100% MPI inspected and are peened.

No, 'preban' and 'postban' are outdated terms used only to refer to the now-expired Federal AW Ban. Basically, preban means 'flash hider and bayonet lug' and postban means bare muzzle or affixed muzzle brake and no bayonet lug.

Our use of the term "listing" means the make/model combination is listed on the Kasler list of banned guns. If that happens for your particualr lower (angels dance, trumpets sound, etc.) you willl have to register it as an assault weapon. There is no crime for adding, changing or deleting features from a registered assault weapon.

Since you've bought an off-list lower, it ain't listed, so you can't configure it as an assault weapon - thus the fixed 10rd magazine or the grip-free configuration.

[FYI bayonet lugs and threaded barrels are irrelevant for AW laws regarding rifles in California. However, semiauto pistols can't have threaded bbls.]

While a flash hider is Ok for a fixed-mag CA rifle, the advantage of NOT having a flash hider is that you can also run your rifle with a detachable magazine if and only if you have no flash hider, pistol grip, telestock, forward grip, etc.
Most folks really don't need a flash hider, and bare-muzzle barrels can be a tad more accurate (if the barrel's good and quality ammo is used, all other things being equal, which they often aren't).

This is the one part that is a little touchy.... and it is also why some of us tended to stay AWAY from RRA's LAR-15 lower receivers.

If you have a CA-AR15 with ALL RRA parts, ie. RRA's LAR-15 lower receiver and RRA buttstock, and RRA upper..... you may virtually build yourself a "BANNED" RRA rifle!! (probably defendable in court tho...)

                  On the CAT2 AW list:
                  Rock River Arms, Inc.
                  - Standard A-2
                  - Car A2
                  - Standard A-4 Flattop
                  - Car A4 Flattop
                  - NM A2 - DCM Legal
                  - LE Tactical Carbine

So, for example, if you get your a RRA's "CAR A2 Upper Half"(http://www.rockriverarms.com/item-de...OKEN=63490680), and you mate it to a RRA's "LAR-15 lower receiver" and a RRA's "A2 fixed stock".... you just made yourself a RRA "Car A2"!!!! What you have *just* built is the "exact" rifle if you order from RRA as a "Car A2"(http://www.rockriverarms.com/item-de...OKEN=63490680), a "Car A2" is also marked as "LAR-15" in the lower receiver. And a RRA "Car A2" is a CAT2-AW(fixed magazine or not...)!!!

It would be MUCH easier to defend case if DOJ/DA is trying to go after you if you have a fixed mag "Stag-15"..... than a fixed mag RRA "CAR A2".....

Indeed I see your point about the all RRA parts. I thought the only interest of the CA DOJ would be of the lower and not the other components you add to it So if I were to change the stock to a Non-RRA, it would be "safer" as to respects to the AW list?

I have a 5.56 Bushmaster 16" v match upper with a chrome lined barrel and chamber, and it is very accurate. I win matches against bolt guns with it.

It may or may not fit tight, but mine fits nicely on a lauer lower. Not a friction fit, but not sloppy either. And they aren't any pricier then other bushy uppers.

There are ways to relive overly tight upper fits too, but they're usually too loose, not too tight.

There is no reason to avoid RRA LAR15s.

A gun can't have two model names. "LAR15" is the model emblazoned on the receiver.

RRA LAR15s simply ain't listed. The DOJ just did a crappy job of listing and put the wrong names down, confusing configuration names with model names.

                          Bill,

Do you think it's risky to have all RRA parts because it closely resembles a factory configuration in which is banned?

ALL banned models of RRA have a different logo all together on the lower than the ones that they are now producing.

You bought a LAR-15 it's in everyones books and receipts as such.

We have a few RRA uppers in stock.

If you have a OLL I wouldn't fret too much about it.
