Before the NightForce that's currently on my 700P, I used a viper PST 4-16x50 and it sat just above the barrel in Seekins low rings on a 20 MOA base. Had to to step up to medium rings with the NF 56mm though, but I don't think you'll have any issues with the PST in low rings.

Exact same here with the 20mm base seekins low rings and pst 50mm worked out great. Then switched to Nightforce 56mm and went to Nightforce medium rings.

      You will be gtg.

Start with a Redfield battlezone 3-9x40. Here's why, is a great first scope. It's cheap, great range, good glass and the main reason....The turrets. They are marked with distances for .308 or 5.56. While they're not dead on, they are close. That really helps when you're starting out. Later you can move it to an AR.

          I now have a Swfa SS x10.

I'm sorry, but BDC Turrets are horrible for learning long range shooting on. Anyone can get close them walk in their hits to the target.

True, but most people don't spend the time practicing anyway. Most long range rifles sit idles for years. In which case, some help is better than no help.

SWFA SS line are the best bang for your buck, i think they are one of the few optic companys that bridges the gap between midrange and high quality optics.

SWFA 3-9X42 -- Look no further. I did plenty of research. I was on a budget, meaning I had less than a grand to spend. If you got money, Schmidt and Bender, U.S. Optic, Nightforce. I got a Remy700 .308. Fun to reload and just shoot. I'm not competing. Having fun getting on target at 600yds with ease.

This guy on youtube has awesome info.

This chart is from his video where he reviews them all. My screen capture covered the lower scopes. SWFA is struck with yellow line.

I was in the same boat as you just about a year ago. I'm currently using the 700 AAC myself. I ended up going w/ a 2nd hand IOR Valdada 10x. Couldn't be happier! I'm also using a Seekins 20moa base. I've taken this setup out to 700 yards hitting steel pigs consistently using Federal GMM. Maybe a little more magnification would be nice but I tell you the glass on this thing is pretty damn clear! Very sharp edge to edge.
I like yourself was very strong on "new glass". I rolled the dice on 2nd hand & couldn't be happier saving 40% off retail. Think about 2nd hand as I figure a lot of folks into this expense hobby of ours generally take care of their gear. Maybe I just got lucky who knows but that's my
