    R700 scope and mounting selection

I got a r700 sps tactical .308 for Christmas. I'm pretty stoked, but now I am plagued with making a choice on optics and setup. I've done a decent amount of research I think, but I guess I just want to hear some of you guy's opinions.

First off, know that this is my first step into the world of modern bolt action rifles and I don't currently own a single scope to my name. I've been all iron sights and I consider myself a decent shot with those. I have not shot any further than probably 300 yard with anything.

I know I want a mil dot reticle or a bdc reticle with mil dot. I would like to have matching mil turrets. My budget for this scope is absolutely no more than $700. My main goal for this gun is to be able to make torso sized hits up to 800 yards or 1000 if that is possible with the gun. That is something I don't know, the capability of the gun and the round.

Of course I would like a ffp reticle with variable magnification, but I'm under the impression that I cannot get that along with quality glass for my budget, so here are a couple of the scopes I'm pondering right now.

    Primary arms ffp variable power
    Swfa ss fixed 10x

As you can see I am entertaining the idea of a fixed power because I heard they are more clear, rugged, and cheaper, and I think it may be easier for me to use as a beginner.

Normally I would not accept a Chinese product, but I feel primary arms has an excellent reputation for customer service as well as quality for a Chinese product.

Lastly, regarding bases, I should go 1 piece? Do I need a 20 Moa base or not?

Sorry for a long winded post but it's a big decision for me and I feel like especially in the manual rifle forum, there are a lot of guys that know what they are talking about.

I have the PA 4-14X FFP with Burris XTR rings and a 20MOA mount from Larue Tactical on my 308 SPS Tactical. Its been a great setup and I routinely hit targets out to 1000 yards. Take the money you save with the scope and buy ammo.

Edit: Also ironically I had the swfa 10x before I sold it for the PA. Both are great scopes but I wanted the FFP with a little more magnification.

      "Swfa ss fixed 10x"

I just put that scope on my Remington 700 and I love it. Works great, and very clear. The turrets are nice target turrets and easy to adjust.
Don't know where you are located, but if you want to try it out next time I go shooting, you are welcome to.
I bought it second hand here on Calguns.

I went with the one piece 20 moa base on my rifle.

Do you have the PA scope with the crazy HUD reticle or just the normal mil dot one? If you have the HUD one, do you like it?

How far have you used the 10x on? I was wondering how small a torso size target would be @ 1000 yards through the 10x or even at 800 yards.

            You'll want a 1 piece base....in steel.
Aluminum just doesn't work well, trust me here.
And yes, get a 20moa base, you'll need it with a droopy 308.

Stay far far away from the PA scopes, they are no better than the counter sniper crapola you hear all the terrible things about.
Check it out carefully, they are one and the same Chinese garbage with whipped shat on top.

You can get a Weaver tactical, a Burris tactical, or a Bushnell tactical in the price range you're sporting. A Vortex PST or a SWFA variable are very close to the same price range.
Don't skimp on glass, you'll hate yourself later if you do.
If you get the 10x you'll be limiting yourself to no close range shots and have issues with the far reaches of what a 308 will do. Don't limit yourself.

Get the scope now and save up for the rings and base.

            Make sense ?

I would go with the 20 MOA one-piece base. As for FFP scopes in the $700 range, SWFA has the 3-15x42 that's supposed to pretty good. Other variable power scopes would include some of the Vortex line although they would probably be SFP. As mentioned, the SWFA fixed power scopes are also a good value/starting point.

Ya for $700 your not going to get a variable magnification FFP 1000 yard scope with great glass and reliable repeatable tracking.

I'd look into fixed power options.

With $700 I would say this

I don't own one or have looked through one, but I have a 10x fixed I love.

                  This one

Don't get a BDC reticle. It's a waste of time. With that dinky short barrel, you'll need to the loads pretty hard for 1,000 yard consistency.

There's only one reason a US company outsources manufacturing to China--to be cheap. Save up a few hundred more and get a usable scope or buy used.

Definitely 1-piece base. I prefer 0 MOA bases because I use mounts that build in cant, but almost every else in the world likes 20 MOA.

This is all you would need. 0 Base, The scope has W/E with 120MOA..

Get the SWFA SS 10x with mil turrets and the mil-quad reticle. It's a great reticle. And a great scope for the price. Stay away from any type of BDC for long range shooting
